Sheriff’s report – February 2022

Following are excerpts of activities reported by the Greene County sheriff’s office:

Monday, Feb. 28: At 5:56 am a deputy and the Jefferson fire department responded to a reported fire in the 1300 block of K Ave in Greenbrier Township. No fire was located. At 10:52 am a deputy and Churdan fire department responded to a grass fire on the 180th Street near I Ave in Bristol Township. At 6:45 pm a deputy investigated a car-deer accident on D Ave near 160th St in Cedar Township. Joseph Carey, 18, of Churdan struck a deer with a 2017 Jeep Wrangler, causing an estimated $4,000 damage to the vehicle.

\Sunday, Feb. 27: At 12:20 am a deputy, Jefferson fire, and Greene County Ambulance responded to a single-vehicle rollover accident on 240th St near Mulberry St. Kegan Claiser, 23, of Eldora lost control of a 2005 Mazda Tribute and rolled it into the ditch. Claiser was taken to Greene County Medical Center for minor injuries. The vehicle was totaled in the accident. Claiser was later arrested on a Hardin County arrest warrant for probation violation*. Charges in connection with the accident are pending lab results. At 6:50 am a deputy assisted the Jefferson police department with a search of a residence in the 500 block of S. Olive St. At 12:34 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of dogs running at large in Rippey. At 3:08 pm a deputy conducted a traffic stop on Highway 30 near X Ave in Junction Township and arrested Kimberly Murphy, 26, of Ankeny on outstanding Guthrie County arrest warrants*.

Saturday, Feb. 26: At 12:19 am a deputy investigated an assault in the 200 block of 8th St in Grand Junction. At 8:52 am a deputy investigated a complaint of criminal mischief in the 600 block of E. Elizabeth St in Grand Junction. At 6:37 pm a deputy investigated a car-deer accident on D Ave near 195th St in Kendrick Township. Joshua Doty, 20, of Jefferson struck a deer with a 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt, causing an estimated $1,500 damage to the vehicle.

Friday, Feb. 25: At 8:32 am a deputy investigated a reported two-vehicle accident in the 100 block of Main St in Rippey. When the deputy arrived both drivers had left the scene.

Thursday, Feb. 24: At 11:36 am a deputy investigated a theft in the 1100 block of Eagle St in Scranton.

Wednesday, Feb 23: At 6:47 pm a deputy investigated a theft in the 1000 block of Eagle St in Scranton. At 9:46 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of harassment in the 2100 block of P Ave in Franklin Township.

Tuesday, Feb. 22: At 9:58 am a deputy picked a black lab in the 1900 block of J Ave in Greenbrier Township and took it to the animal shelter.

Monday, Feb. 21: At 1:49 pm a deputy investigated a theft in the 2400 block of 337th St in Washington Township. At 4:57 pm a deputy investigated a theft in the 800 block of Percival St in Grand Junction. At 7:15 pm the sheriff and deputies investigated a single vehicle vs cow accident on Highway 30 and Apple Ave in Kendrick Township. Trenton Vanderheiden, 47, Glidden struck a cow on the roadway with a 2014 Ford F150 pickup truck,  causing an estimated $2,500 damage to the vehicle.

Sunday, Feb. 20: At 2:21 pm a deputy assisted the Carroll County sheriff’s office with a single-vehicle motorcycle accident in the 2800 block of 190th St in Carroll County. At 3:04 pm a deputy investigated a burglary in the 100 block of Main St in Scranton.

Saturday, Feb. 19: At 1:52 pm a deputy, Jefferson fire, Scranton fire, and Ralston fire responded to a barn fire in the 300 block of 225th St in Scranton Township. The structure was a total loss. At 5:45 pm a deputy assisted with a cow out in the 1500 block of W Ave in Junction Township.

Friday, Feb. 18: At 11:44 am a deputy investigated a burglary in the 1400 block of Kirkwood Ave in Jackson Township. At 5:51 pm a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with a two-vehicle accident on N. High and W. State Sts. At 7:15 pm a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with a burglary in the 200 block of W. McKinley St.

Thursday, Feb. 17: At 9:47 am a deputy investigated a complaint of trespass in 1000 block of Eagle Street in Scranton. At 11:02 am a deputy investigated a complaint of criminal mischief in the 400 block of Perkins St in Churdan. At 8:02 pm a deputy arrested Tyler Proft, 20, homeless on a warrant for probation violation*.

Wednesday, Feb. 16: At 11:12 am the sheriff investigated a small fire in a trailer in the 600 block of Irving St in Scranton. The owner of the trailer put out the fire. Nothing suspicious was found. At 12:44 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of criminal mischief in the 1100 block of Lincoln St in Scranton.

Tuesday, Feb. 15: At 1:17 pm a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with a search of a residence in the 100 block of N. Walnut St. At 5:12 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of harassment in the 1100 block of Lincoln St in Scranton.

Monday, Feb. 14: At 4:22 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of criminal mischief in the 400 block of S. 11th St in Grand Junction.

Friday, Feb. 11: At 7:43 am a deputy assisted with unlocking a car that had a child in it in the 900 block of High St in Scranton. At 8:12 am a deputy investigated a complaint of criminal mischief in the 1600 block of 170th St. At 1:38 pm a deputy investigated a single vehicle accident on Highway 4 near 340th St. in Franklin Township. Kirk Kiger, 55, of Jefferson lost control of his 2009 Toyota Corolla and enter a ditch that was full of water. Damage to his vehicle was estimated at $10,000.

Thursday, Feb. 10: At 10:11 pm a deputy and Scranton fire responded to an electrical pole that was on fire on D Ave near 210th St in Kendrick Township.

Wednesday, Feb. 9: At 2:48 pm a deputy investigated a report of goats on Highway 30 near Orchard Ave east of Jefferson.

Tuesday, Feb. 8: At 8:15 am a deputy investigated a single-vehicle accident on Highway 30 near X Ave east of Grand Junction. William Ayers, 72, of Lake City lost control of his 2013 Honda Accord and entered the north ditch. Ayers was not injured. Damage to his vehicle was estimated at $15,000. At 3 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of harassment in the 700 block of School St in Churdan.

Monday, Feb. 7: At 9:46 am a deputy investigated a theft in the 1100 block of U Ave in Junction Township. At 3:44 pm a deputy assisted with cattle out on 170th St near Terrace Ave in Hardin Township. At 5:41 pm a deputy investigated an assault in the 400 block of E. Paton St in Paton.

Saturday, Feb. 5: At 9:38 am a deputy investigated a hit and run accident on College St in Paton. Ronald Kraft, 44, of Gowrie struck a utility pole sometime in the night and left the scene of the accident. The estimated damage to the 2019 GMC Sierra was $8,000 dollars. The cost to repair the light pole was estimated at $3,000. Kraft was cited for failure to maintain control. At 12:35 pm a deputy assisted the Jefferson Police Department with a consent search in the 800 block of 250th St in Dawson Township. At 7:49 pm a deputy removed a deer from the roadway on D Ave near 177th St in Dawson Township. At 11:42 pm a deputy conducted a traffic stop on Highway 4 near 210th St north of Jefferson. Suspected marijuana was located. Charges are pending lab results.

Friday, Feb. 4: At 2:46 pm a deputy, Churdan fire, and Jefferson fire departments responded to the 1200 block of 150th St in Dawson Township for a house filling with smoke. The furnace had a small electrical fire. There was minimal damage to the house. At 3:54 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of harassment complaint in Dana. At 11:09 pm a deputy assisted the Carroll County sheriff’s office with a two-vehicle accident on A Ave and 200th St in Kendrick Township.

Thursday, Feb. 3: At 10:59 am deputies assisted the Jefferson PD with arresting Richard Tuhn Jr, 43, of Jefferson for dominion or control of a firearm by a felon, possession of methamphetamine- first offense,  possession of marijuana- first offense, theft- fourth degree, and possession of drug paraphernalia*. At 2:29 pm a deputy investigated railroad crossing arms down on Paton St in Paton. At 11:02 pm a deputy assisted with unruly inmate in the jail.

Wednesday, Feb. 2: At 3:42 am a deputy removed a deer from the roadway on County Road E-53 and Parkland Ave east of Jefferson. At 12:08 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of identity theft in the 300 block of Division St in Grand Junction. At 2:28 pm the sheriff’s office conducted a search warrant at 1008 E. Main St in Grand Junction. Suspected controlled substances were seized and charges are pending lab results. At 8:41 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of illegal dumping in the 1500 block of Quaker Ave in Grant Township. At 10:04 pm a deputy investigated a no contact order violation in the 500 block of N. Elm St in Jefferson.

Tuesday, Feb. 1: At 10:32 am the sheriff’s office assisted the Jefferson police department execute search warrants at 302 E. Vest St in Jefferson and 201-1/2 E. Main St in Grand Junction. At 12:05 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of trespass in the 500 block of N Ave in Dawson Township.

*In all cases when a defendant has been charged, this is merely an accusation, and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
