The Greene County boys basketball team picked up two wins, one against West Marshall and the other against Perry, but lost to Kuemper Catholic in play the week ending Dec. 18.
The Rams started their week on Tuesday, Dec. 14, at home against the West Marshall Trojans. Greene County took the lead right off the opening buzzer, winning the first quarter 12-9 and the second 29-23. The Rams increased their lead in the second half of the game, dominating the second half to win 65-42.
Richard Daugherty led in points and assists, with 19 and four respectively. Jesse Miller added another 18 points and Bryce Stalder helped out with an additional 11. The Rams were successful at 27 of their 61 field goal attempts. Jackson Morton led in rebounds with nine; Staler and Miller had eight rebounds each.
On Dec. 17, the Rams traveled to Perry High School. The Bluejays went into the game with no wins, and ended the night the same way. Greene County scored 27 points in the first half of the game, holding the Bluejays to 15. With the Rams stealing the ball 11 times and rebounding 22 balls on the defensive side, GC boosted their lead after the halftime break. The game ended with a 60-40 Greene County win.
Miller was the point leader for the game with 17, followed by Daugherty’s 16. Morton scored 10 points. Miller was also responsible for 13 of the team’s 31 rebounds.
Saturday, Dec. 18, brought the only loss for the week for the Rams. The home game against the Kuemper Catholic went to the Knights each quarter, and ended in a 78-57 loss for the Rams. Daugherty scored 18 points. Miller and Stalder each added 11.
“We had a very productive week going 2-1 and saw many positives throughout each game by many players,” said coach Chris Nelson. “The first two games we controlled from the first quarter on and our defense had a lot to do with that. Unfortunately, Saturday we just couldn’t get the stops when we needed them and you could tell the legs were a little tired going into the 4th quarter.
“Overall I am very pleased with our guys and the work they continue to put in.”
