Food safety certification class Dec. 13

Registration deadline is Nov. 22

The Greene County Extension office is offering an important food safety certification training for food service managers on Dec. 13. At least one staff person in every restaurant, school cafeteria, or nursing home food service in Iowa must have a current certificate in Food Safety Management. Registration is open through Nov. 22.

The class will be held Monday, Dec. 13, from 9 am to 6:30 pm, at ISU Extension-Greene County office, 104 W Washington St, in Jefferson. Registration is online at https://bit.ly/2ZCw31i.

“Certification in ServSafe® meets the Iowa Food Code requirements to have a certified food protection manager in all establishments,” said Mary Krisco, class instructor and ISU Extension and Outreach food and health specialist. “We live in a time when food safety hazards and risks are prevalent. Serving safe food is mandatory. This eight-hour program aims to train food service professionals about food safety requirements and best practices to meet them.”

According to Krisco, the class is based on the National Restaurant Association’s ServSafe® certification program and the Iowa Food Code. The class is beneficial for cooks at childcare centers, senior meal sites, and hospitals. Cooks at childcare centers are eligible for a free scholarship to take this ServSafe® class.

Participants receive a copy of the ServSafe®Manager training manual when they register, so that they can study a few weeks before the class date. At the end of six hours of review in class, participants take a 90-question exam. Those who pass the exam are certified for five years.

Research has shown that food operations with at least one ServSafe®  certified food safety manager have significantly lower food safety violations.
