Public health will have pediatric Covid-19 vaccine, but not until next week

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) now recommends that all persons age 5 and older be vaccinated against Covid-19.

“Elementary-age kiddos are well-known as the ‘shedders and spreaders’ of respiratory infections. Widespread vaccination for Covid-19 is a critical tool to protect everyone, especially those at highest risk, from severe illness and death,” said Greene County public health director Becky Wolf.

Children ages 5-11 are now able to receive the Pfizer pediatric Bio-NTech vaccine in an age-appropriate dose. Other vaccines, such as influenza and childhood vaccines, can be given at the same time as theCovid-19 vaccine.

Parents are advised to call their children’s vaccine provider (pediatrician, family medical clinic, or local public health) to inquire about scheduling an appointment. Pharmacies are also administering the vaccine.

In Greene County, the Pfizer pediatric vaccine will be provided at Greene County public health (515-386-3228) and HyVee Pharmacy (515-386-4151).

Public health is awaiting a shipment of pediatric Pfizer vaccine. Wolf hopes to receive the shipment by Nov. 10. There will be announcements in local media of upcoming clinics during family-friendly hours and how to register online. “We ask for your patience as we wait for our supply to arrive,” Wolf said.
