Following are excerpts of activities reported by the Jefferson police department:
Sunday, Oct. 31: At 7:59 pm staff at Sparky’s One Stop reported one of the subjects with a fake ID the previous day was back at the business. Three local juveniles’ names were given to the officer as being the three responsible. The officer is investigating. At 9:12 pm an officer investigated a backing accident in the parking lot at HyVee. Alayna Hadley of Jefferson was backing a 2016 Ram 1500 pickup truck owned by Shiena Hadley when she backed into a 2011 Chevrolet Impala owned by Brant Schmit of Jefferson. Brant’s vehicle sustained a reported $3,000 in damages, while the Hadley vehicle had a reported $300 in damages. At 10:36 pm Roger Nielson reported a hit and run accident that occurred in the parking lot at Camden Apartments at 102 S. Grimmell Rd. A younger male in a Chevrolet Tahoe backed into a vehicle and left the area. Neilson grabbed the registration plate from the vehicle. A 2005 Ford Taurus, owned by Frances Baker of Jefferson, received $2,000 in damages. The officer is working to speak with the driver
Saturday, Oct. 30: At 11:31 am a caller advised of a semi tractor-trailer on Highway 30 approaching Jefferson from the east that was losing items off the trailer. The officer located the semi at Sparky’s One Stop and spoke to the driver about the complaint. The officer checked several miles of Highway 30 but did not locate any debris. At 9:55 pm staff at Sparky’s reported three young subjects attempting to purchase tobacco with what was believed to be fake ID’s. The subjects had already left the business.

Thursday, Oct. 28: At 9:13 am staff at Oly’s Corner reported someone had placed items in the business’s dumpster. The officer is investigating.
Wednesday, Oct. 27: At 9:49 am a complainant reported a Jefferson female has possession of his vehicle and is refusing to return it. The officer is investigating.
Tuesday, Oct. 26: At 7:39 am a complainant reported criminal mischief to his vehicle while it was parked in the 200 block of W. Head St. A window had been broken out and a door had been pried open on the 2006 Pontiac Grand Prix while it was parked in the 200 block of W. Head St. The officer estimated damages at $5,000. The investigation continues. ***** Numerous Jefferson residents have reported receiving letters in the mail from fictitious neighbors asking them to sign up for “Nextdoor.com.” A website is listed to go to to sign up for the free service. The letters are mailed from California and officers can not find any contact information to ensure it is not a scam. To this date, no losses have been reported to the PD.
Monday, Oct. 25: At 12:45 pm a complainant reported catching a stray dog in the 600 block of W. Monroe St. The dog was placed in the animal holding facility. At 4:12 pm an officer investigated a backing accident in a parking lot near N. Cedar and E. Perry Sts. Larry Hunecke of Jefferson backed his 2019 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck into a into a 2019 Jeep Cherokee, owned and operated by Jerald Johnson of Colfax. The Hunecke vehicle had a reported $1,000 in damages, while the Johnson vehicle had a reported $1,500 in damages. At 5:52 pm a complainant reported she had captured a stray dog in the 800 block of W. State St. The dog was placed in the animal holding facility.
Sunday, Oct. 24: At 10:07 am a resident reported he had caught a feral cat in a live trap and had questions of what could be done. The officer answered the questions.
Saturday, Oct. 23: At 10:45 am an officer assisted the Guthrie County sheriff’s office on Highway 4 near the intersection with 300th St. The officer assisted as needed until a Greene County deputy arrived and took over. At 12:07 pm a complainant reported criminal mischief to his vehicle in the 1000 block of W. Adams St. The officer is investigating.

Thursday, Oct. 21: At 6:31 am an officer investigated an accident at W. Lincoln Way and Elm St. Jackson Morton of Jefferson left the posted stop sign heading north on Elm St. Daniel Gehling of Scranton left the posted stop sign heading south on Elm and the vehicles collided in the intersection. The Morton vehicle, a 2016 Ford Fusion owned by Deborah Morton, had a reported $800 in front end damages. Gehling’s 2005 Honda Civic had a reported $4,000 in front end damages. Gehling’s vehicle was disabled from the damages and removed from the scene at a later time. At 3:20 pm an officer assisted a public works employee at a residence in the 200 block of N. Locust St. The water meter and metering equipment was discovered to be missing from the residence. The event is still being investigated. At 7:47 pm a complainant reported an injured deer in the road on County Road E-57, just west of Jefferson. The officer dispatched the injured animal and removed it from the roadway.
Wednesday, Oct. 20: At 8:36 am staff at Greene County Elementary advised of a friendly cat that keeps slipping into the building. They had captured the cat this time. The officer placed the cat in the animal holding facility. At 2:09 pm a complainant reported the theft of a pumpkin from her porch in the 700 block of S. Oak St. A neighbor had witnessed a female take the pumpkin off the porch, place it in a car and drive away for several minutes. The neighbor provided the officer with the identity of the female she witnessed taking the pumpkin. The officer is investigating. At 4:34 pm an officer investigated a two-vehicle accident at the uncontrolled intersection of N. Maple and W. Washington Sts. Mike Renslow of Jefferson was eastbound on Washington driving his 1996 Dodge Ram pickup truck. He collided with a southbound 2006 BMW operated by Jordan Joy of Scranton and owned by James Joy. Damage to Renslow’s vehicle was estimated at $800. Damage to Joy’s vehicle was estimated at $1,500; the vehicle was towed from the scene. Charges are pending for Jordan Joy for fail to yield to vehicle on right.

Monday, Oct. 18: At 11:01 am a complainant reported the theft of prescription medications from a residence in the 600 block of W. Monroe St. The officer is investigating. At 9:09 pm a complainant reported her 2011 Chevrolet Malibu had the driver’s door keyed while parked in the 500 block of N. Olive St. She provided the officer with a possible suspect in the matter. The officer is investigating.

Saturday, Oct. 16: At 1:56 pm an officer investigated a three-vehicle accident at N. Elm and W. Washington Sts. Heather Kissell of Jefferson was eastbound on Washington St driving a 2009 Toyota Scion owned by Christopher Kissel. She failed to stop as posted and struck a northbound 2018 Lincoln Reserve operated by Kelly Jewett of Paton and owned by Moffit Ford of Boone. After striking that vehicle, Kissell continued eastbound and struck a 2012 Town and Country minivan stopped at the stop sign at Washington and Elm. The minivan was operated and owned by Donna Tourte of Jefferson. One driver was transported by ambulance for minor injuries. Kessel was cited for driving while license suspended and failure to yield while entering a through highway. Two vehicles were towed from the scene. Damages to Kissel’s vehicle were estimated at $5,000. Damage to the Moffit Ford vehicle was estimated at $4,000 and damage to Tourte’s vehicle was estimated at $3,000.
Friday, Oct. 15: At 1:56 pm an officer investigated an accident near N. Elm St and Central Ave. Jeri Reese of Jefferson was northbound on Elm St driving a 2016 Dodge Journey owned by Reese Automotive. She attempted to change lanes from the outside lane to the inside lane and struck a 2008 Chevy Silverado in her blind spot. The pickup was driven and owned by Lathan Davis of Jefferson. Reese was cited for improper lane change. Damage to her vehicle was estimated at $200. Damage to Davis’ vehicle was estimated at $100. At 2:35 pm staff at the Jefferson public library reported a trespass event. The officer is investigating the report. At 3:18 pm a complainant reported the theft of cans from the Kiwanis can cage in the 200 block of E. Lincoln Way. The complainant provided the officer with a registration plate for the vehicle involved. The officer is investigating.

Wednesday, Oct. 13: At 7:05 pm an officer began investigating a backing accident at Casa de Oro restaurant. A 2019 Ford Expedition, owned by Casey Johnston of Grand Junction, was struck while parked at the business. A witness provided the officer with the identity of the other driver involved, who left the scene. The officer is working to speak to the other driver involved.
Tuesday, Oct. 12: At 9:41 am an officer investigated a property damage accident at First United Methodist Church, 307 S. Wilson Ave. A vehicle had driven into the church yard and struck two signs. The officer is investigating. At 3:34 pm a complainant reported a male subject abused a dog at a residence in the 400 block of N. Chestnut St. The officer is investigating the reported offense. At 5 pm a complainant reported a neighbor had mowed his flowerbed off in the 400 block of W. State St. The officer will speak to the neighbor about the incident.
Monday, Oct. 11: At 11 am staff at Oly’s Corner reported a gas drive off for $15 in fuel. The officer is investigating. At 3:52 pm a complainant reported a tame rabbit in her yard in the 200 block of E. Wilcoxway. The officer knew the owner of the animal lived in the area and returned the pet rabbit to the owner.
Sunday, Oct. 10: Routine activity reported.
Saturday, Oct. 9: At 8:25 am a Greene County deputy was dispatched to the 900 block of County Road E-53 (240th St) for approximately 20 cows blocking the roadway. The Jefferson officer was closer and asked to assist until the deputy arrived. The officer assisted until the Greene County deputy arrived and took over the scene. At 10:13 am a complainant reported her neighbor has been allowing their cats to come onto her property and defecate. The officer responded to the 300 block of E. Adams St and spoke with all involved. At 7:04 pm a complainant reported a fight occurring at a wedding reception. Officers and deputies responded to Clover Hall at the Greene County Fairgrounds. They separated the parties involved and are investigating.
Friday, Oct. 8: At 9:44 am a complainant of Perry reported she was being harassed by an individual over Facebook Messenger. The officer is investigating. At 10:18 pm a Jefferson resident reported an injured stray cat near the intersection of W. State and N. Elm Sts. While the officer was retrieving an animal carrier for the cat, another person arrived and attempted to hold the injured animal. This person was bitten by the stray cat, causing injury. The animal was taken to the Jefferson Vet Clinic and will be sent to Ames for rabies testing.
Wednesday, Oct. 6: At 7:26 am a caller advised of a deer lying in the roadway in the 1700 block of N. Elm St. The officer removed the animal from the road.
Tuesday, Oct. 5: At 8:29 pm a resident caught a stray kitten in the 400 block of E. Russell St. The officer placed the cat in the animal holding facility.
Monday, Oct. 4: At 9:50 am a complainant spoke with an officer about a possible harassment which had occurred on 10/02. The officer is investigating. At 2:45 pm a complainant reported her juvenile daughter had been assaulted while attending school. She did not think the school was taking proper steps in the matter and requested law enforcement to take a look at the incident. The officer is investigating.
Sunday, Oct. 3: At 9:25 am a complainant reported a juvenile male in a vehicle parked in the 300 block of N. Pinet St. She could not wake the sleeping subject. The officer arrived and made contact with the subject. The officer’s investigation led to the arrest of a 17-year-old juvenile male for possession of alcohol under legal age and public intoxication (simple misdemeanors)*. He was taken to the LEC and later picked up by a parent. At 7:02 pm a complainant reported a driver had struck a deer and continued driving in the 1400 block of N. Elm St. The deer fell just off of the roadway. The officer and the complainant searched the area, but did not locate the deer.
Saturday, Oct. 2: At 6:29 pm a caller advised a child had left a motorized car in the 300 block of S. Locust St. The officer took the black car to the LEC to see if someone claims it.
