The Thomas Jefferson Gardens of Greene County board will host a series of discussion events entitled Understanding Democracy.
The first of the free events will be held Sunday, Oct. 31, beginning at 2 pm at the Thomas Jefferson Gardens Welcome Center.
Randy Evans, executive director of the Iowa Freedom of Information Council, will be the first speaker in the series. The IFIC seeks accountability at all levels of government. Evans became executive director in 2015 after a 40-year career with the Des Moines Register.
Evans has received the Iowa Newspaper Association’s Distinguished Service Award, the Iowa Center for Public Affairs Journalism Free Press Champion Award, and the Iowa Freedom of Information Council’s Friend of the First Amendment Award.
Evans will speak on the press and the First Amendment.
Evans grew up in Davis County in southern Iowa and began working at the age of 16 doing custodial work and writing occasional sports stories for the Bloomfield Democrat.
The public is invited to attend. The event will also be attended by invited media representatives and journalists. Attendees will be expected to practice social distancing and masks are strongly encouraged.
