There will be several contested races in the Nov. 2 general election. Billie Jo Hoskins, deputy county auditor for elections, released the names of candidates after the close of the nominating period Sept. 15.
Voters in Jefferson will elect three city council members. All three incumbents whose terms expire are running for re-election – Harry Ahrenholtz, Patrick Zmolek and Darren Jackson. Also vying for seats on the council are Mark A. Wright and Heath Enns.
Mayor Matt Gordon is not up for re-election. His term expires in 2023.
In Grand Junction, incumbent mayor Gerold Herrick is running for re-election, challenged by Jason McDowell.
Grand Junction residents will elect three persons to the city council. With no incumbents on the ballot, candidates are Mark A. Renslow, Spencer Kirk, Lora Stoline Lyons, Paula Hoskinson, Michelle Hillman, Bailey Mount and Brian Pritchard.
In Scranton, three persons are running for the position of mayor. Candidate are Jerald R. Boyd, David M. Dideriksen and Jerry Erwin. Two council positions expire at the end of the year; no candidates filed nominating papers.
Churdan voters will see only one name on the ballot for mayor, that of incumbent Joleen Killeen. There are four persons running for two council seats: incumbents Nick Christianson and Heidi Geisler, and Mark Kersey and Mary Vogel.
There are no contests in Dana. Incumbent mayor Mandy Sims is running unopposed for another term, as are incumbent council member Christopher J. Vargas and Anthony Sims.
There are also no contests in Paton or Rippey.
In Paton, Steve Burrell is running unopposed for mayor. Incumbents Diane Hanlon and Zach Schweers are running for two council seats, and incumbent Jacob Bohnet is running to fill a vacancy.
In Rippey, mayor Daniel Brubaker is unopposed for re-election, as are incumbent council members Donald Carpenter and Garry Higgins.
Greene County Schools business manager Brenda Muir reported there are six candidates for three positions on the board of education. Incumbent Catherine Carman-Wilson is running for re-election. Other candidates on the ballot are Bonnie Silbaugh, Sean Sebourn, Cindi Daubendiek, Nicholas Lehman and Michelle Fields.
Candidates for the Paton-Churdan board of education are Zach Schweers, Mitch Stream and Dennis Tilley. Voters will elect three board members.
Also on the ballot will be a public measure asking if gambling games should continue to be allowed at a gaming structure in Greene County. Per the Iowa Code, voters must again consent to allow gambling eight years after a gaming license is granted in order for the license to be continued. This will be the final opportunity voters have to approve or disapprove gambling in the county.
