The Ambassadors of Jefferson Matters: A Main Street & Chamber Community will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the re-opening of the Raccoon River Valley Trail bridge on Wednesday, Aug. 25 at 4 pm. The bridge is located just south of 252nd St (gravel) south of Jefferson. Attendees will need to walk a short distance on the paved trail to the bridge. The rain date is Thursday, Aug. 26, also at 4 pm.
Free “Bike Jefferson” t-shirts will be given away at the event while supplies last.
There will be several speakers for the event, including Greene County conservation director Dan Towers and journalist Chuck Offenburger.
The RRVT bridge collapsed in March of 2019. Towers said large chunks of ice slammed against the wooden pilings that support the 600-foot bridge and about 70 feet of the bridge collapsed into the river. For the past two years, Greene County conservation has been working with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and was approved for 85 percent of the repairs to the damaged
structures. The bridge is now open to bicyclists and pedestrians.
