Sheriff’s report – July 2021

Following are excerpts of daily activities reported by the Greene County sheriff’s office:

Saturday, July 31: At 6:37 pm a deputy removed a deer from the roadway on County Road N-65 (D Ave) near County Rd E-10 (140th St) west of Churdan.

Friday, July 30: At 12:43 pm a deputy investigated an inmate flushing a puzzle in the toilet as criminal mischief. At 8:34 pm a deputy investigated a dog bite in the 300 block of Irving St in Scranton.

Thursday, July 29: At 8:06 am a deputy arrested Melissa Larson, 42, of Grand Junction on an arrest warrant for possession of a controlled substance- third offense and possession of drug paraphernalia*. At 4:40 pm a deputy investigated a road rage incident on Highway 144 near County Road E-26 (170th St) in Junction Township. At 5:12 pm a deputy requested an Iowa State Patrol trooper to investigate a accident in which the deputy was involved. At 5:38 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of harassment in the 1000 block of Irving St in Scranton.

Wednesday, July 28: At 8:12 pm a deputy arrested Gailee Richter, 19, of Coon Rapids on a warrant for possession of a controlled substance- first offense (serious misdemeanor)*.

Tuesday, July 27: At 6:27 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of fraud in the 700 block of S. 13th St in Grand Junction. At 11:31 pm a deputy investigated a violation of a no contact order in the 1400 block of Highway 144 in Grand Junction.

Monday, July 26: At 2:44 am a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with a report of underage children at Sparky’s. At 1:49 pm a deputy investigated a single vehicle accident in the 1900 block of 283rd St in Washington Township. A 16-year-old male lost control of a 2008 Dodge Avenger and rolled the car once in the east ditch. The driver was not injured. He was cited for failure to maintain control. Damage to the vehicle was estimated at $2,500.

Sunday, July 25: At 4:04 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of fraud in the 400 block of E. Main St in Grand Junction. At 7:51 pm a deputy assisted with a donkey running at large near 160th St and H Ave in Bristol Township.

Saturday, July 24: At 12:30 pm a deputy arrested Connar Hornsby, 24, of Grand Junction for arrest warrants from Greene and Guthrie Counties for failure to appear*.

Friday, July 23: At 2:58 am a deputy investigated suspicious activity in the 1000 block of E. Main St in Grand Junction. At 9:25 am a deputy picked up found ammunition in the 400 block of State St in Scranton. At 1:55 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of manure on the roadway on County Road P-14 (J Ave) near County Road E-63 (320th St) in Greenbrier Township. At 4:29 pm a deputy investigated a domestic assault in the 2300 block of County Road E-26 (170th St) east of Dana. James Eberle, 28, of Dana and Tanya Helmrichs, 41, of Dana were both arrested for violating a protective order*.

Thursday, July 22: At 12:57 pm a deputy and the Jefferson fire department responded to a reported fire on Kirkwood Avenue near Highway 30 in Jackson Township. There was no fire in the area. At 2:01 pm a deputy investigated an assault in the 100 block of W. Percival St in Rippey. At 8:11 pm a deputy investigated a car-deer accident on 140th St near Highway 144 south of Paton. Jon Peters, 55, of Manson struck a deer with a 2021 Volkswagen Jetta, causing an estimated $1,200 damage to the vehicle.

Wednesday, July 21: At 8:40 am the sheriff and deputies, Iowa State Patrol, Department of Motor Vehicle Enforcement, Greene County Ambulance, Jefferson fire, and Grand Junction fire responded to a train-car accident at the County Road P-33 crossing. Marvin Krieger, 62, of Coon Rapids died in the accident. The Iowa State Patrol investigated the accident. At 8:59 am a deputy and Grand Junction fire responded to a reported fire near Highway 30 and 18th St in Grand Junction. It was found to be contained in a burn barrel. At 10:50 am a deputy took a complaint of a lot of wildlife running around in Grand Junction. At 12:31 pm a deputy investigated a burglary in the 100 block of E. Main St in Grand Junction. At 9:52 pm a deputy investigated a domestic assault in Rippey. At 11:02 pm a deputy investigated an assault in the 200 block of N. 16th St in Grand Junction.

Tuesday, July 20: At 6:42 am a deputy investigated a complaint of trespass in the 1000 block of Sandoe St in Grand Junction. At 11:13 am a deputy investigated the theft of a vehicle from a field drive on Highway 30 near County Road P-46 (W Ave) east of Grand Junction. The vehicle was recovered on B Avenue in Boone County. At 1:33 pm Charles Learned, 54, of Fort Dodge was booked into the jail on an arrest warrant for failure to appear. At 8:15 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of harassment in the 700 block of State St in Scranton.

Monday, July 19: At 7:16 pm a deputy investigated an assault in the 800 block of High St in Scranton.

Sunday, July 18: At 3:47 pm a deputy and Churdan fire responded to a grass fire in the 400 block of E Ave in Cedar Township. At 10:28 pm a deputy investigated a car-deer accident on Highway 30 near M Ave west of Jefferson. McKenzie Christy, 18, of Scranton struck a deer with a 2003 Hyundai Sonata, causing an estimated $700 damage to the vehicle.

Saturday, July 17: At 2:33 am a deputy arrested Patrick Cook, 53, of Des Moines for operating a motor vehicle while under the influence on Highway 30 near County Road P-33 (S Ave) west of Grand Junction. At 4:48 pm a deputy assisted an Iowa State trooper with a pursuit on Highway 4 near Highway 30. At 7:18 pm a deputy investigated a theft in the 900 block of 222nd St in Jackson Township. At 8:17 pm a deputy investigated a reported noose in a tree near the Lions Tree Park on Highway 30 east of Grand Junction. It was found to be a piece of clothing stuck in a tree. At 11:02 pm a deputy attempted to stop a driver in the 900 block of Locust St in Scranton. The male fled into a house. Anthony Davis, 32, of Scranton was arrested for eluding and interference with official acts*.

Friday, July 16: At 10:55 am a deputy investigated a complaint of animal cruelty in the 2200 block of 230th St in Grand Junction. At 12:18 pm a deputy investigated a dog bite in the 900 block of 310th St in Greenbrier Township.

Wednesday, July 14: At 9:51 am a deputy investigated a complaint of fraud in the 1000 block of 215th St in Jackson Township. At 12:16 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of fraud in the 1600 block of 305th St in Franklin Township. At 5:54 pm a deputy investigated an assault in the 1000 block of Railroad St in Grand Junction. At 6:45 pm a deputy arrested Sarah McBurney, 39, of Fort Dodge on a warrant for theft- third degree*.

Tuesday, July 13: At 4:40 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of illegal dumping in the 1200 block of Highway 4 north of Jefferson. At 7:26 pm a deputy arrested Joshua Uranga, 40, of Pilot Mound on warrants for forgery and theft- third degree*.

Monday, July 12: At 8:30 pm a deputy arrested Jody Schad, 46, of Jefferson for an arrest warrant for a parole violation*.

Sunday, July 11: At 1 am a deputy investigated a noise complaint at Spring Lake. At 1:03 am a deputy conducted a traffic stop on Highway 30 at Highway 4. The driver, Maddison Battani, 19, of Des Moines provided a false name. Battani was arrested for interference with official acts, identity theft, and driving while license barred*. At 2:20 am a deputy assisted the Boone County sheriff’s office with a complaint of shots fired in the 2200 block of C Ave in Boone County. A Boone County deputy arrested two subjects. At 8:18 am a deputy investigated a complaint of fraud in the 700 block of Eagle St in Scranton. At 2:16 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of harassment in the 400 block of Harding St in Churdan.

Saturday, July 10: At 3:11 am a deputy attempted to stop a vehicle on Highway 30 near Falcon Ave east of Scranton. The driver lost control on I Ave and went into the ditch. The driver, Charles Bradshaw II, 57, of Jefferson fled into a corn field and was arrested at or about 9:25 am. Bradshaw was charged with interference with official acts, trespass, eluding, reckless driving, failure to obey stop sign, and driving while license denied, suspended, and or revoked. At 3:37 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of harassment in the 600 block of N. 18th St in Grand Junction.

Friday, July 9: At 6 am a deputy investigated a single-vehicle rollover in the 2300 block of 330th St in Washington Township.  A 2001 Toyota Camry registered to Exhaust Pros of Perry was found rolled in the ditch with no driver in the area. The driver has not been located. At 7 am a deputy and the sheriff investigated a single-vehicle rollover on County Road E-19 (140th St) near F Ave west of Churdan. Isabell Perez, 19, of Churdan was westbound and lost control of her vehicle when she swerved to avoid an animal in the roadway. The 2006 Nissan Sentra entered the north ditch and rolled three times. Perez was transported to Greene County Medical Center by private vehicle. Her car was totaled in the accident. At 4:12 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of harassment complaint at 6th and Main Sts in Grand Junction.

Wednesday, July 7: At 9:29 pm a deputy assisted the Perry PD with locating a runaway at Spring Lake. At 10:53 pm a deputy investigated a burglary in the 800 block of E. Percival St in Grand Junction.

Tuesday, July 6: At 9:53 am a deputy investigated a trespass issue in the 900 block of 222nd St in Jackson Township. At 2:31 pm a deputy arrested Christopher Quirk, 38, of Jamaica on an arrest warrant for a parole violation*. At 11:52 pm a deputy assisted with cattle out on 252nd Street near Neola Ave in Grant Township.

Monday, July 5: At 12:09 am a deputy investigated a trespass complaint on the railroad tracks near Sandoe and 19th St in Grand Junction. At 12:57 am a deputy investigated a fireworks complaint in the 1000 block of Main St E. in Grand Junction.

Sunday, July 4: At 5:36 am a deputy, the Jefferson, Grand Junction, Paton, Rippey, Churdan, Scranton, Bouton and Ogden fire departments, and Greene County Ambulance responded to a structure fire in the 300 block of Main St E, in Grand Junction. The building was a total loss. At 9:31 am a deputy investigated a complaint of fireworks in the 700 block of Hager St E. in Grand Junction. At 9:48 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of fireworks in the 500 block of Lincoln St in Scranton. At 10:03 pm a deputy and Scranton fire responded to a grass fire in the 600 block of Brentwood Ave in Cedar Township. The fire was ignited by fireworks. At 10:41 pm a deputy investigated a trespass complaint in the 2300 block of 110th St in Paton Township. At 11:48 pm a deputy investigated a single vehicle rollover accident on 305th Street and V Ave in Washington Township. John Mahlberg, 26, of Dawson lost control of a 1994 Acura Integra. The Iowa State Patrol covered the accident.

Saturday, July 3: At 6:22 am a deputy assisted with a horse out on J Avenue near 270th St in Greenbrier Township. At 10:20 am a deputy investigated a 911 hang up on 310th Street near Highway 4 in Franklin Township. At 4:53 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of fireworks in the 400 block of Harding St in Churdan. At 11:17 pm a deputy assisted with a horse on the roadway on J Avenue near 270th St. At 11:39 pm a deputy investigated a car-deer accident on Highway 30 near Oakland Ave east of Jefferson. Ashley Roggentne, 35, of Boone struck a deer with a 2016 Chevrolet Traverse. The estimated damage to the vehicle was $1,500. At 11:48 pm a deputy assisted with a pursuit of a motorcycle on Highway 30 and S Ave.

Friday, July 2: At 12:55 am a deputy investigated a complaint of criminal mischief in the 500 block of W. Paton St in Paton. At 1:22 am a deputy assisted with a horse on the J Ave near 230th St in Jackson Township. At 3:30 pm a deputy investigated a ditch fire that was ignited by fireworks on 310th St and J Ave in Greenbrier Township.

Thursday, July 1: At 1 am a deputy performed a traffic stop on Highway 30 at B Ave that resulted in the arrest of Rosemarie Espiritu, 21, of Marshalltown for driving while license barred*.

*In all cases when a defendant has been charged, this is merely an accusation, and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
