The Greene County softball team ended the regular season with a 10-4 victory over Ogden Friday, July 2. The Rams were taken out of postseason play by HOIC champion Saydel 13-1 on Tuesday, July 6.
The Rams finished with a 6-16 record and 3-10 in HOIC competition for sixth place. The team recorded 129 hits, including 106 singles, 17 doubles, two triples, four home runs and 72 RBIs. They scored 86 runs and committed 44 errors.
Greene County loses just one senior, Karissa Stephenson, from the team. There are only two juniors on the roster so the next couple of years should bring experience and improvement to the team.
Rams 10 ~ Ogden 4
Greene County started strong against Ogden, scoring three runs in the first inning. The next four innings went scoreless until Ogden put a run on the board in the sixth inning. The Rams matched that in the top of the seventh to lead 4-1. Ogden rallied with three runs in the bottom of the inning to tie the score 4-4 and send the game into extra innings. One more inning was all Greene County needed, erupting for six runs and a 10-4 advantage. The defense held Ogden in their at-bat to win 10-4.
The Ram offense exploded for 14 hits, 11 singles and three doubles. Emma Hoyle blasted two singles for three RBIs. Alexa Peters plated two runs on three base hits. Paige Teeples posted two RBIs on a double and single. Emma Stream hammered a double and a pair of singles with one RBI. Additional hits came from Olivia Shannon, two singles; Carmyn Paup, RBI single; Karissa Stephenson, double. The offense was aided by six stolen bases.
Hoyle threw all eight innings, facing 29 batters. She allowed four earned runs on seven hits, walked four and fanned 11 batters. The Rams played errorless ball.
Saydel 13 ~ Rams 1
Greene County met Saydel on the softball diamond for the third time this summer, this time in the Class 3A Region 4 first round game. The outcome was the same, a loss for the Rams. Saydel has enjoyed a super season, compiling a 25-7 overall record and winning the Heart of Iowa Conference with a 12-1 tally.
Tuesday the score was 13-1 with each team plating one run in the first inning. Unfortunately, the Eagles added seven in the second inning, four in the third and one in the fourth to end the game by the 12-run rule.
Greene County scored when Peters rapped a single, the Rams only hit in the game. Hoyle was hit by a pitch and Peters crossed home plate when Stream hit a ground ball and the Saydel shortstop made a throwing error.
