JPRD offers many summer activities

The Jefferson park and recreation department has a full schedule of activities planned for youngsters and adults.

There are three sessions of free swim lessons, with registration on a first come basis. The schedule is:

Families may not sign up for more than one free session.

Evening lessons will be held Aug. 2-6 from 5:30 to 6:16 pm for all levels. Registration fee is $20.

A strength, speed and conditioning program for youngsters in grades 5-8 will meet Mondays and Wednesdays from 1 to 2:30 pm, July 5-21. The class will offer both a conditioning and a strength workout. The primary goal is to improve athletic performance by improving strength, power, speed/agility, quickness, and cardio respiratory capacity. The program will also improve confidence and mental toughness and decrease the likelihood and severity of injury.

Instructor is Landon Braun. Registration is $30 for Greene County Community Center members and $35 for non-members.

Youth volleyball will meet Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, July 14-16. Students entering grades 3-4 will meet from 1 to 2 pm, and students entering grades 5-6 will meet from 12 to 1 pm. Participants will learn volleyball basics through drills and games.

Instructor is Ram volleyball head coach Chris Heisterkamp. Registration is $15 for GCCC members and $20 for non-members.

Adult co-ed softball will begin league play Tuesday, July 13. Games will be placed Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6 pm.

Teams must have a minimum of eight players, with a balance of males and females. A minimum of four teams are needed to hold the league. The game schedule will be developed based on the number of teams.

Team registration is $200. The registration deadline is July 6.

HyVee presents Healthy Snack Class Monday and Tuesday, July 12 and 13, from 2 to 3 pm. Participants will learn to make a new healthy snack each day, with participants doing as much as their age allow. Youngsters in grades K-4 are welcome.

The class will be taught by Jefferson HyVee staff. Cost is $15 for GCCC members and $20 for non-members.

Youngsters in grades 3-6 are invited to Explorations in Art July 26 and 27 from 1 to 3 pm. Students will spend the two class sessions learning about design, color, and layering with mixed media. Students will use collage techniques and a variety of tools to create their own unique canvas creations.

Instructor is Jolene Peters of Art on the Fly. Registration is $40 for GCCC members and $50 for non-members.

Safety Camp forchildren starting kindergarten in August (age 5 by Sept. 15, 2021) is slated for Tuesday-Friday, Aug. 3-6, from 9 to 11 am. Safety Camp, which is sponsored by the Jefferson Elks lodge, is designed as an orientation to safety topics important for children to know before attending school. Topics covered include bus safety, bicycle safety, pool safety, car safety, electrical safety, drug/alcohol safety, stranger safety, railroad safety, fire safety, animal safety and telephone safety.

A wide variety of experts present the various topics. There is no registration fee thanks to the Elks’ sponsorship.
