Rough stretch for Ram baseball team

The Greene County baseball team suffered six losses before experiencing a victory which came June 5 with a win over Algona in the Boone tournament.

The Rams dropped games to South Hamilton 11-0, Van Meter 7-3, PCM 5-0, West Marshall 6-1 and Boone 25-2. The Rams upset Algona 7-6.

S Hamilton 11 ~ Rams 0  South Hamilton came to Jefferson Friday, May 28, and claimed an 11-0 victory in six innings of play. The Hawks got on the board quickly and in a big way with eight runs in the second inning. They added a run in the third and two in the sixth.

Van Meter 7 ~ Rams 3  Van Meter defeated the Rams 7-3 for their fourth loss of the season. The Bulldogs put three runs on the board in the first inning, adding two more in each of the fourth and fifth innings. Greene County scored three runs in the sixth to keep from being shut out. Bryce Stalder’s single was the lone hit for the Rams. GC struck out 13 times against four Bulldog pitchers. 

Peyton Kinsey started on the mound for the Rams and took the loss after allowing four earned runs on five hits and three walks. He struck out four batters. Blake Hammen pitched two innings, giving up one earned run on one hit, one walk, and a hit batter.

PCM 5 ~ Rams 0  Greene County came up with four base hits but couldn’t string them together to score any runs. Hammen poked two singles while Joe Carey and Kinsey each had one.

Carey was charged with the loss on the mound. He gave up five PCM runs, one of which was earned, and struck out six batters. Kole Teeples relieved Carey and tossed three scoreless innings. The Rams made four errors.

W Marshall 6 ~ Rams 1  Getting hits and scoring runs haven’t come easy for the Greene County baseball team. That was true again Friday, June 4, in a 6-1 loss in State Center to West Marshall. The Rams fell to 0-5 on the season and 0-4 in the Heart of Iowa Conference, although they did score a run for the first time in four league contests.

The Trojans hit a three-run homer in the first inning, scored two in the third and one in the fifth. The Rams got on the board in the sixth. 

Stalder was the losing pitcher, allowing four earned runs on seven hits and a walk. He hit two batters with pitches and struck out seven.

Offensively, the Rams had four hits with two by Stalder and one each for Teeples and Carey. Both teams played solid defense with two Greene County errors and one on the Trojans.

Boone 25 ~ Rams 2  Greene County was back in action Saturday at a three-team round robin event in Boone. The Rams were pummeled in game one by the host Toreadors 25-2. 

Rams 7 ~ Algona 6  Twenty minutes after the Boone game, Greene County took on an Algona team that had won five of its first six games. The game ended with a 7-6 Greene County victory in 11 innings. The Rams collected a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the 11th for their first win of the season after six straight losses.

Algona had five errors in addition to walking the Rams nine times and hitting two others with pitches. Three Greene County pitchers combined to strike out 18 Bulldog batters with 10 from Carey in six innings. Alex Roberts started on the mound and had four strikeouts while Teeples picked up the win with four strikeouts in 2-2/3 innings of relief. Teeples also doubled and singled for two of the Rams’ six hits.
