The Greene County softball team has had a full schedule to start the season. The girls lost their home opener Friday, May 28, to South Hamilton 7-3 and fell to Boone 11-0 and Carroll 14-0 in the Ogden tournament the next day. Wednesday, June 2, Prairie City-Monroe rolled into Jefferson and went home with an 8-1 victory.
Friday, June 4, the Rams traveled to State Center for a huge offensive game, defeating West Marshall 18-6. The Trojans won the other side of the doubleheader 8-3. Saturday Greene County lost two games in the Bondurant-Farrar tournament. Alburnett topped the Rams 11-1 and Newman Catholic was victorious 8-6.
Greene County is 1-6 overall on the season, 1-3 in Heart of Iowa play. Roland-Story leads the conference 3-0 with Saydel second 3-1.
S Hamilton 7 ~ Rams 3 South Hamilton took a 7-0 lead before Greene County got on the board with two runs in the sixth inning and another in the seventh as the Hawks claimed the victory 7-3. Karissa Stephenson led the Rams with a double, single and RBI. Carmyn Paup rapped an RBI single as did Emma Stream. Olivia Shannon, Kaylee Stalder, Paige Teeples and Alexa Peters also had a base hit.
Emma Hoyle pitched the first five innings and was relieved by Stalder who was tagged with the loss. Together they gave up seven runs, six earned on seven hits, walked four, hit two batters and struck out seven. The team committed four errors.
Boone 11 ~ Rams 0 In game one in Ogden, the Rams had just four hits against Boone, singles by Shannon, Stream, Stalder and Analynn Baugh. The Toreadors hammered 10 hits, including two home runs to score 11 runs and win by the ten-run rule at the end of the fifth inning.
Stalder was the losing pitcher, allowing 11 runs, nine earned, on 10 hits with five walks, a hit batter and one strikeout. The Rams were tagged with three errors.
Carroll 14 ~ Rams 0 Carroll took the second game of the tournament 14-0 in three innings. The Tigers put five runs on the board in the first inning and added nine more in the third. They stroked 10 base hits and a home run while holding Greene County to three singles by Paup, Stalder and Peters.
Hoyle took the loss on the mound as she tossed 11 hits and gave up 14 runs, 12 of which were earned. She walked three batters, hit one and struck out two. The Rams committed three errors.
PCM 8 ~ Rams 1 Wednesday, June 2, the Rams fell to 0-4 with an 8-1 loss to Prairie City-Monroe. PCM was ahead 7-0 before Greene County scored a run in the sixth inning. Stalder poked two singles while Stream and Peters each had one base hit.
Hoyle pitched the loss, yielding eight runs, three earned, on 10 hits. She walked one, hit one and fanned eight batters. The defense struggled as they tallied seven errors.
W Marshall 8 ~ Rams 3 West Marshall put a run on the board in the first inning and three in the second to take a 4-0 lead over Greene County. The Rams picked up some hits to score two runs in the third, but the Trojans took back one in the bottom of the inning to make the score 5-2. WM struck again in the sixth with three runs. The Rams were unable to score more than one run in the seventh, going down to the Trojans 8-3.
Stalder suffered the loss on the mound. With help from Hoyle, the duo gave up eight runs on six hits with six walks, a hit batter and seven strikeouts.
Hoyle cracked a two-run double and Peters added two base hits. GC committed five errors.
Rams 18 ~ W Marshall 6 Greene County bats came alive in the second game in an 18-6 rout over West Marshall where the Rams collected 13 hits. The Trojans led 5-1 going into the third inning. GC exploded for six runs to go up 7-5. WM added their last run in the bottom of the third. The Rams offense continued to fire, adding four runs in the fourth, four in the fifth and three in the sixth inning where they ended the game by the 10-run rule 18-6.
Hoyle was the winning pitcher. She threw all six innings, allowing eight hits, six walks, two hit batters and seven strikeouts. The Rams played errorless ball while WM committed seven miscues.
Offensively, the Rams had multiple players with big games including Stream. The sophomore catcher hammered her first home run, a two-run line drive that cleared the left field fence. She also doubled and singled to drive in three runs. Shannon reached home plate five times on a double, three singles, and she scored on a WM error. Hoyle singled three times, was hit by a pitch, and drove in one run. Stalder and Teeples each had two singles and Payton Kokenge added a base hit. Teeples and Karissa Stephenson each had an RBI.
Alburnett 11 ~ Rams 1 The Rams collected just three hits with Stalder getting a triple. Stevenson had the lone run batted in with a single and Hoyle added a base hit. Hoyle pitched the first four innings and took the loss with Stalder throwing in relief.
Newman Catholic 8 ~ Rams 6 The Rams led Newman 6-3 after 4-1/2 innings, but five runs in the bottom of the fifth carried the Knights to the victory.
