The Greene County girls basketball team lost 58-16 to the ranked Cyclones in Harlan, Monday, Feb. 1. The Feb. 4 game against Prairie City-Monroe was cancelled due to bad weather. The Rams hosted Nevada Friday, Feb. 5, and fell 50-32.
Greene County was scheduled to play Southeast Valley and Saydel early this week. Regional tournament action begins Saturday with the Rams in Atlantic against the Trojans at 7 pm. Atlantic is 7-12 on the season, the Rams are 5-11. The winner travels to Cherokee on Wednesday, Feb. 17.
Harlan 58 ~ Rams 16
It was a monumental task from the outset, Greene County vs Harlan. The 12-5 Cyclones are ranked 10th in the 4A Class schools and average 60 points per game. The Class 3A Rams average 29 points and are 5-10 on the season.
Harlan had their way, scoring 44 points in the first half while holding Greene County to two. The second half was played with a continuous clock. The Rams were outscored 10-3 in the third period for a 54-5 tally going into the final quarter. GC made 11 and Harlan 4 for a 58-16 final.
Brianna Habben and Sadie Wilson each scored five points and Makala Kafer had four. Harlan employed a suffocating press in the first half, causing the Rams to commit 23 turnovers.
Greene County made just seven baskets in the game while Harlan tallied 23, six of which were three-pointers. The Rams were outrebounded 33-21.
Nevada 50 ~ Rams 32
Greene County got off to a great start to lead Nevada 14-10 at the end of the first quarter. But the Cubs caught some momentum and stifled the Rams for a halftime advantage of 20-17. A 13-0 Nevada run at the end of the third put the Cubs up 36-25. The Rams were unable to score the double digits they needed and fell 50-32.
Habben and Wilson led the Rams with 12 points apiece. Osterson added five. Habben grabbed 11 rebounds and Osterson added six boards.
GC made 11/33 field goals, including five three-pointers, for 33 percent. They sank five of seven freethrows and posted 26 rebounds. The Rams committed 30 turnovers.
Ram boys
The Greene County boys basketball team lost two games last week. The Rams were humbled by Harlan 91-38 on Monday and lost by a wide margin to Nevada 70-48 on Friday. The snowed-out game against Prairie City-Monroe on Thursday has not been rescheduled.
The Class 3A District tournament begins Monday, Feb. 22. Brackets were not yet available at press time.
Harlan 91 ~ Rams 38
It was a tough night for Greene County in Harlan as the Cyclones blistered the nets for 91 points, defeating the Rams 91-38. Harlan bombarded Greene County to lead 34-6 after one period. They kept up the barrage to take a 59-21 advantage at halftime. In the second half, the Cyclones outscored GC 32-17 for the final tally.
Max Riley led the Rams with 14 points and five rebounds. Richard Daugherty added 10 points. Harlan had three players with 20 or more points. GC made 8/23 two-point goals and 6/26 three-pointers while Harlan hit 23/33 from the field and 12/23 treys. The Cyclones controlled the boards posting 34 rebounds. The Rams pulled down 19 caroms.
Nevada 70 ~ Rams 48
Greene County got off to a good start, leading Nevada 15-11 at the end of the first quarter. But Nevada caught fire, going on an 18-0 run to outscore the Rams 23-9 in the second period and go up 34-24. The Cubs added to their advantage in the third 54-41 as well as in the fourth for a final tally, 70-48.
Daugherty was leading scorer for the Rams with 16 points, followed by Stalder with nine, Zach Goff and Jesse Miller with seven each and Caden Telleen with six. Miller pulled down eight rebounds and Stalder added five. Daugherty had four steals.
Greene County made 18/52 field goals, including seven treys, for 35 percent. Nevada made 42 percent of their shots with nine three-pointers. They shot 23 free throws, making 13 while the Rams were 5/13 at the line. The Cubs outrebounded GC 46-29.
