The Greene County basketball teams lost to the West Marshall Trojans on Friday, Jan. 29, and to the Roland-Story Norsemen Saturday, Jan. 30.
Games against Kuemper Catholic slated for Jan. 26 was cancelled due to weather. Games slated for Jan. 27 were postponed to Thursday, Feb. 4. The Rams will host Nevada Friday, Feb. 8.
The Rams fall to 5-9 overall and 2-6 in conference action. West Marshall improves to 10-5 and 5-2 in HOIC play. Roland-Story leads the league at 8-0 and are 11-4 overall.
WM 58 ~ Rams 30
The Greene County girls started well and led 12-11 before West Marshall went on a 16-0 run. The Trojans were up 27-14 at the half. A four-point third quarter by the Rams gave WM a 41-18 lead going into the final frame. The largest WM lead was 33 points late in the game. Greene County fell 58-30.
Brianna Habben scored 15 of the Rams’ 30 points. Sadie Wilson had eight points and Brianna Osterson, five. Habben cleaned up the boards with 13 rebounds.
The Rams made 11/32 field goals for 34 percent while WM hit 18/45 for 40 percent. The visitors made 17/19 free throws while Greene County shot just six from the charity line, making five. The Rams committed 29 turnovers.
R-S 59 ~ Rams 26
The ninth ranked Roland-Story girls made nine three-pointers in their 59-26 victory over Greene County. The Rams failed to score in the first period to trail 13-0. They made just four points in the second quarter for a 28-4 halftime deficit. The Norsemen rolled in the third, outscoring Greene County 22-10 to make the score 50-14. The entire fourth quarter was played with a continuous clock.
Makala Kafer was the only Ram in double figures with 12 points. Wilson finished with six points. Kafer also led in rebounding with four caroms.
The Rams made 10/32 field goals for 31 percent while R-S shot 51 percent on 21/41. GC was outrebounded 30-16.
The boys lost a close game against West Marshall, with the final score 58-54. Roland-Story blitzed Greene County 94-55.
The Ram boys fall to 4-11 overall, 2-6 in conference action. West Marshall improves to 6-8 and is 2-5 in HOIAC play. Roland-Story leads the league at 8-0 and is 13-2 overall.
WM 58 ~ Rams 54
The Rams trailed West Marshall by only one, 19-18, at the end of the first but a cold second quarter spelled doom for the Rams as the Trojans went up 40-27 at halftime. GC made up some ground in the third to close the gap to 47-41. A valiant effort by the Rams fell just short as the Trojans held on to win 58-54.
Three Rams hit double figures in the scoring column with Bryce Stalder posting 20, Richard Daugherty 14 and Max Riley, 11. Stalder grabbed seven caroms, Daugherty six and Riley, five.
Despite eight three-pointers, the Rams couldn’t overcome the second quarter dry spell. They made 21/56 field goals for 38 percent. WM hit 20/51 for 39 percent. The scoring gap was at the free throw line where the Trojans made 15/24 and the Rams went 4/10. WM outrebounded the Rams 33-26.
R-S 94 ~ Rams 55
The Greene County boys could not keep up with the high-powered offense of league-leading Roland-Story as they scored a season high 94 points to defeat the Rams 94-55.
The Norsemen made 20+ points in each of the four quarters of play, starting with a 24-17 first period. By halftime R-S increased their advantage to 46-32. R-S tallied a 48-23 second half to win 94-55.
Daugherty finished with 19 points that included five three-pointers. Stalder added 10 with Riley and Brayden Roberts connecting for eight apiece. Roland-Story’s Sam Skaar nailed six three-pointers in a game-high 23-point performance. R-S owned the boards as they grabbed 46 rebounds to Greene County’s 16. Daugherty and Caden Telleen each had four caroms.
The Norsemen shot 58 percent on 38/66 field goals which included 11 baskets behind the arc. The Rams made 21/55 for 38 percent with nine three-pointers.
