The Greene County girls basketball team picked up two wins last week, defeating Woodward-Granger 39-32 in Woodward on Monday, Jan. 18, and the Blue Jays in Perry Thursday 36-29. South Hamilton topped the Rams 47-20 on Tuesday in Jefferson.
Greene County improved to 5-7 on the season and is 2-4 in HOIC play.
Rams 39 ~ W-G 32
Woodward-Granger held an early 12-6 advantage over Greene County, but the Rams kept chipping away at the lead to trail 18-14 at the break. GC again outscored the Hawks in the third, down by just one, 24-23, going into the final frame. A big fourth quarter for GC sealed the victory for the Rams 39-32.
Brianna Habben posted another double-double, scoring 15 points and grabbing 14 rebounds. She also blocked seven Hawk shots. Natalie Heupel added nine points and Emma Hoyle had six. Brianna Osterson and Lily Muir tallied six caroms apiece.
GC made 14 of 43 field goals for 33 percent. They struggled behind the arc, making one of nine attempts. The team grabbed 34 rebounds and committed 25 turnovers.
SH 47 ~ Rams 20
It was a close first quarter with South Hamilton leading 7-6. The Hawks got rolling in the ensuing periods and Greene County didn’t. SH led 22-9 at halftime and 36-17 after three. The Hawks went on to win 47-20.
Habben fired 10 points. Five other Rams scored, but no one hit more than three points. Habben pulled down seven rebounds and Osterson had five caroms and four steals. Freshman Makena Galetich was high scorer for the Hawks with 17.
The Rams made just eight shots on the night in 28 attempts for 29 percent. They hit 4/11 free throws. SH fired 16/46 with 7/15 coming from three-point range for 35 percent. The Rams were outrebounded 28 to 13 and committed 28 turnovers to 15 for WG.
Rams 36 ~ Perry 29
Greene County trailed Perry 9-3 after one period, but a couple of GC runs gave the Rams a 19-15 advantage at the break. The Rams increased their lead in the third to go up 31-23 at the end of the quarter. GC held off Perry in the final frame for a 36-29 victory after the Blue Jays closed the gap to five points at 33-28.
Habben and Makayla Kafer led the Rams with 11 and 10 points. Osterson added eight points. Habben posted another double-double with 11 rebounds. Muir grabbed seven boards and Osterson had six. Kafer snatched five steals and Habben had five blocked shots.
The Rams made 16/54 field goals for 30 percent. The long ball was elusive as they went 0/19 beyond the arc. The team posted 39 rebounds and 20 turnovers.
