The Greene County basketball teams initiated their new gym with the first contest of the season played against Ogden Saturday afternoon.
The Friday night contest against Roland-Story was postponed until Jan. 30.
The girls opened with a victory while the boys went down to defeat.
Rams 49 – Ogden 26
The Greene County girls basketball team won their first game of the new season, and their first game with new head coach and activities director Todd Gordon, defeating Ogden 49-26 on Saturday afternoon. In the first game of the season for both teams, and having lost practices due to the pandemic, the two teams combined for 72 turnovers.
The Rams jumped out to a 13-0 first quarter lead and allowed Ogden just five points in the second while adding 15 for a 28-5 tally at halftime. The Bulldogs picked up nine points in the third but still trailed 36-14 going into the final frame. Greene County put up 13 points in the fourth while Ogden had 12 for the 49-26 final score.
Brianna Habben scored a career high 28 points and grabbed a team high 13 rebounds. She also recorded three blocked shots. Makala Kafer added nine points. Brianna Osterson dished four assists and had four steals.
The Rams made 37.5 percent of their field goals, topping Ogden who posted 21.7 percent. GC hit 13 of 19 free throws while the Bulldogs made just six of 18. The Rams dominated the boards, pulling down 49 rebounds to 10 for Ogden. The game was filled with turnovers with 40 by the Rams and 32 for the Bulldogs.
Ogden 58 – Rams 50
The Greene County boys basketball team fell in their season opener Saturday to Ogden 58-50.
Ogden took the early first quarter lead over the Rams 18-11 and never relinquished the advantage. Greene County closed the gap in the second period to trail by just four points at the break, 30-26, but the Bulldogs opened up a lead of nine points at the end of the third, 41-32. Ogden expanded their lead to 45-35 in the fourth quarter before the Rams scored nine in a row to get within a point at 45-44. The Bulldogs withstood the run and increased their lead to 11 points late in the period, before winning 58-50.
Bryce Stalder led the Rams with 17 points, followed by Caden Telleen with 14, including four treys; Max Riley, nine and Zach Goff, eight. Goff was the leading rebounder with 15 boards. He also had five steals and two blocks.
Kolby Moorman paced Ogden with 16 points.
Ogden made 20 two-point goals, two three-pointers and 12/18 free throws. Greene County hit 16 field goals, five treys and three of seven charity shots. Each team collected 36 rebounds. ~courtesy of The Scranton Journal
