The dedication of the Mahanay Bell Tower took place 54 years ago in 1966, and it’s time to celebrate. A Tower Tunes Live Birthday Concert will be played Friday, Oct. 16, from 5 to 6 pm. Four local musicians will perform to provide a full hour of carillon music for the community to enjoy. Each musician will select his or her favorite genre for a variety of tunes. “Happy Birthday” will likely be among the selections along with hymns, school songs, and favorite classics.
Bell Tower Foundation board members will hand out special birthday treats to the first 54 in-person listeners. Ding-Dongs and a penny for the penny souvenir press will be distributed on the plaza or to those listening from their vehicles. The penny press is located in the lobby area of the Tower.
For those not able to listen in person, the concert will be available on the Mahanay Bell Tower’s Facebook page.
The Mahanay Bell Tower has moved to October regular hours of Saturday and Sunday from 10 am to 4 pm. Youth age 18 and younger can ride the elevator to the top at no charge courtesy of the Greene County Community School Foundation. Adults pay $3 to ride the elevator.
Covid precautions are in place with masks needed to enter the Tower. Limited numbers allow for social distancing in the elevator and observation deck. Visitors may also call for an appointment for any day by calling the Jefferson Matters: A Main Street & Chamber Community office at 515-386-2155.
