Tough week for Ram volleyball

The Greene County volleyball team had a rough week of competition that saw losses to Prairie City-Monroe on Sept.8, to Roland-Story on Sept. 10, and four in the South Hardin tournament on Saturday. The Rams are now 2-7 overall, and 0-2 in the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference.

All the Rams volleyball matches have been at visiting sites because the new gym is not yet finished for action.

PCM 25-25-24-22-15 ~ GC Rams 17-19-26-25-4

After losing the first two sets 17-25 and 19-25 to PCM in Monroe, the Rams battled back to take the third and fourth games 26-24 and 25-22 before falling in the fifth and deciding set 4-15.

Coach Chris Heisterkamp noted that the Rams had better passing and hit the ball hard.

Brianna Osterson led her team in kills with 17, followed by Lily Muir with 10. Natalie Heupel set 21 assists.

Muir reached double digits with 14 digs as did Eliza Carlson with 11.

Team serving was 88.3 percent with three players reaching 90 percent efficiency. Carlson fired 19 of 21 with two aces; Katrina Heupel stroked 10 of 11 with two aces and Osterson went 18 of 20 and an ace. Natalie Heupel hit 89.5 percent on 17 of 19 with an ace.

R-S 25-25-25 ~ GC Rams 12-23-12

Roland-Story, ranked No.11 in Class 3A, defeated Greene County in three straight sets 25-12, 25-23, 25-12.

The Rams led 6-3 in the first set before R-S scored eight of the next nine to points to go ahead to stay. The second game was close with Greene County up 14-11. The Norsemen came back to claim a 20-23 advantage. The Rams tied the set which included back-to-back ace serves by Muir. R-S scored the final two points to win game two. In the final set, the Norsemen scored eight consecutive points to lead 13-5 and went onto win 25-12.

Osterson hammered seven kills while Muir and Isabella Schroeder each tallied five kills. Osterson also led the team in digs with six, followed by Muir, K Heupel and Emma Hoyle with five apiece.

Serving was off a bit with just one player reaching the 90 percent efficiency mark. Emma Hoyle served 10 of 11 with two aces. Muir and K Heupel stroked eight of nine for 88.9 percent. Service errors by the Rams were an issue at times, along with serve reception.

South Hardin tournament

“Inconsistencies plagued us throughout the day,” lamented Heisterkamp. “Although our serving was good, and we had some amazing attacks at times, our passing errors led to most of our problems. We have a few days to work out some issues and prepare for South Hamilton later next week.”

Greene County suffered four losses in the South Hardin tournament played in Hubbard. They lost to Boone 14-21, 22-20, 12-15; Gladbrook-Reinbeck 12-21, 8-21; Webster City 13-21, 16-21 and Edgewood-Colesburg 22-24, 21-10, 11-15.

Osterson led the Rams with 11 kills and Muir had six. N Heupel topped the team with 13 digs, followed by K Heupel with 10 and Muir with nine. N Heupel served 9/9 with two aces; Osterson 10/11 with an ace; Carlson 13/14 and Muir 8/9. The team stroked 60/65 for 92 percent.

(Stats for the day exclude the Webster City and Edgewood-Colesburg matches as they were not available at press time.)

The Rams meet South Hamilton Thursday, Sept.17, and have a triangular with South Central Calhoun and Panorama in Rockwell City next Tuesday.
