Developer Adam Sweers of Carroll met with Lt Governor Adam Gregg and Jefferson city officials Sept. 10 to tour the former White House Apartments located at 215 S. Wilson Ave. The use of Workforce Housing Tax Credits were key in funding the remodeling plans.
Sweers shared his plans for the vacant and gutted building, remodeling it into 12 apartments.
“We have the infrastructure already here. Let’s use it,” stressed Sweers. “We’re trying to figure out how to make buildings more usable.”
Gregg was in agreement, noting the state has more jobs than people to fill them and part of the problem is not having suitable housing. He explained the Workforce Housing Tax Credit program had a five-year backlog. This year the state dedicated $25 million to clear the slate and get things moving.
“Hopefully there will be future projects here and other places,” added Gregg.
The building was originally a laundromat and dry cleaners. Apartments were added later. After the original owner, Carroll White, passed away, the building fell into disrepair. Greene County Development purchased the building and then sold it back to the developers at a lower price using some funds from Grow Greene County.
The design calls for a welcome area in the front entrance and patio area in the rear. There will be one three-bedroom apartment with an estimated rent of $900 per month. Eight two-bedroom apartments will rent for $750 per month and three one-bedroom apartments renting for $650 per month.
The apartments will have individual HVAC systems but will share a common laundry. Natural lighting is planned throughout.
“We’re quite confident we will have the building filled,” said Sweers. “We’re looking for a quick turn around.”
“I appreciate your entrepreneur spirit,” concluded Gregg. “Bring us back for the ribbon cutting.”
