A new interpretive sign has been installed near the entrance of the Mahanay Memorial Carillon Tower.
The sign was created by the Bell Tower Community Foundation to explain the long road to the completion of the 47-bell carillon in 2017. Foundation president Carole Custer said the sign is a permanent educational tool for visitors whether the tower is open or closed.
“The carillon is such a unique landmark, we wanted to provide information year-round about the carillon, its bells, donors who purchased bells and made major contributions to the Let the Bells Ring campaign, and inscriptions on the bells. Since no one can see the actual engraved inscriptions on the bells in the tower, this display provides the text on each bell for visitors and generations of families and friends of donors to see in years to come.”
The sign structure and installation project was completed by the Greene County engineer’s office under the direction of county engineer Wade Weiss.
