A popular feature for kids of all ages at Thomas Jefferson Gardens of Greene County is the trio of playable, outdoor musical instruments. No matter the age, skill, or ability of the visitor, the “sound sculptures” are an engaging attraction and interactive art. Music builds community and these instruments help people express creativity in an outdoor environment.
A generous donation by Lois McAtee and family, in honor and memory of many loved ones, made the purchase of the third instrument possible. Installed in June by Gardens board members, this one completes the planned group of compatible instruments; in total, a $15,000 project.
The musical enhancement to the Gardens began in 2016 with the tall contra bass chimes, followed by a xylophone in 2018. These instruments were made possible primarily with a grant from the Rotary Club of Jefferson and funds from Lois McAtee and her late husband Dean McAtee and the Jim and Jacque Andrew family.
“Thomas Jefferson’s interest in music along with the musical tradition of this county community influenced the board’s decision to add this element to the Gardens’ array of attractive features,” said Mary Weaver of the TJG board. “These beautiful instruments invite participation and interaction which we hope brings visitors back again and again. Frankly, it’s hard to walk by them without ‘playing’ with the attached mallets. We are grateful for all support of the Gardens.”
Thomas Jefferson Gardens of Greene County is a non-profit entity and its Education and Welcome Center is the home of the combined Jefferson Matters: Main Street and Jefferson Area Chamber of Commerce at 201 East Lincoln Way in Jefferson and serves as the “front door of Greene County”.
