Well, it’s been a little while since we actually had some news or events going on at the Marchant Memorial Library this year. It seems like we have been closed down due to COVID-19 for a long time. But we aren’t going to let that stop us for summer reading. We are going to try some new ways to celebrate our love of reading and get kids interested in the library. The summer reading theme this year is “Imagine Your Story,” which works great with fairy tales and it works great with going “beyond books” at the library!
What is the summer reading program going to look like for kids this year? This year summer reading is going to make grab-and-go kits available throughout the week as well as some online elements. On Mondays (starting July 6) we will have a Facebook Live video on the library’s Facebook page. This video will introduce the topic of the week, show everyone how to do the craft/activity for the week, and will give you a sneak peak about what we have planned next week. The grab-and-go kits will be available after the Facebook Live video is over. Parents or kids can pick up their kit anytime from Monday afternoon until Friday.
On Thursdays at 2 pm we will offer a Zoom meeting room for the kids to listen to a story, talk about/show off their craft for the week, and they will be able to answer the voting question that will be in their grab-and-go kit. So we will use technology to help us to get together and talk about that week’s fairy tale and the kids will have the supplies and instructions to do an activity or make a craft.
That all sounds pretty cool, right? We want to make sure to thank New Way Trucks for sponsoring the craft kits this year! They have always been so generous to our community, and their support of the library is very much appreciated!
But wait – there’s more! The Greene County Librarians and the Greene County board of supervisors are throwing in some other fun activities that we haven’t done before. We are going to host a bubble parade towards the end of July (dates and times will be announced later) that really looks like a lot of fun. We will sponsor a bubble parade in Scranton, Churdan, Paton, Jefferson, Grand Junction, and Rippey. We are also going to provide some website links for 13 different online programs. The Scranton library will include this information along with the grab-and-go kits starting in July. There are magic shows, bubble shows, and a lot more fun stuff that is available for youngsters in Greene County who participate in the summer reading programs!
Online registration is open on our website or you can pick up a paper copy of the registration form on the front door of the library. Please register your youngsters for summer reading so that we know how many grab-and-go craft kits to make each week! Please meet the deadline of June .
We have also planned some summer reading challenges for the teens and adults. The first challenge is the Fairy Tale Bowl. Modeled after March Madness, this is a tournament for fairy tales. You can stop by the library – the teen/adult challenge #1 is posted on the front door or you can print your own form from our website. All you need to do is pick who you think will be the winner of each bracket, all the way to the grand champion of the fairy tales. Return the form through the drop box behind the library. You must have your guesses in before June 30! You can vote each week in July to help determine the winners – voting can be done on our website, our Facebook page, or pick up a paper voting sheet at the library. We have other challenges in the works for teens/adults that start in July. We will have some online Zoom meeting room discussions and we might even try to get a game going through Zoom!
There is a lot going on this summer at the library, so make sure to read the Scranton Journal or Greene County News Online, check our Facebook page, or go to the library’s website to stay up to date on all the fairy tale fun.
