Children age 4 through fifth grade are invited to imagine their story during the Jefferson public library’s summer reading program with a theme “Imagine YOUR Story!” A special programs is also planned for infants and children up to age 4. Both programs are free.
Registration is open now; the program begins June 22.
Library staff understands the uncertainty connected to this summer and has compiled a long list of things children CAN do. “During the months of June, July, and August, we invite children to do craft and STEM kits, YouTube virtual shows, Zoom Room activities, story times, ALL Together interactive readings, Just for YOU puppet shows and fairytale readers’ theatre, a scavenger hunt, look and finds, spot the difference challenges, story walks, and more. There will be activities to do at home, virtual activities to do online and a bubble parade. Absolute Science will amaze and delight you with their bubble creations using unique bubble wands from all over the world,” children’s librarian Terry Clark said.
The more minutes a child reads, the more opportunities he or she will have to win prizes. A name will be drawn weekly for a chance to hear a “Front Step Story” read by someone in the community at the winner’s home. “Just take a seat on your front step and enjoy a special story just for you,” Clark said.
Each child who turns in minutes read will earn a paperback book, T-shirt and a pizza certificate, and someone will win a new bicycle.
This year’s summer reading program is free due to the generous sponsorship of Breadeaux Pizza, Greene County board of supervisors, Home State Bank, Hy-Vee, Peoples Bank, Wells Fargo Bank, and the Friends of the Jefferson Public Library.
Parents and children who want more information can call the Jefferson public library children’s department at 515-386-4415.
“We invite you to join us this summer and ‘Imagine YOUR Story’ at the library,” Clark said.
