Virtual kick-off slated for May 15
The Relay for Life of Greene County originally planned for Friday, April 24, has been rescheduled for Friday, Aug. 7, from 5 to 9 pm at the Greene County Community Center in Jefferson. This year’s Relay theme is “We are HOPE!”
The Relay, although moved from Saturday to a Friday evening, will be very similar to past Relays, with a community barbecue, a Survivor Walk and a reception honoring cancer survivors and their caregivers, laps around the walking track, a silent auction and plenty of camaraderie. “Those are ingredients we just can’t leave out of the mix of the hope,” event leadership team chair Tori Riley said.
Because the Relay is still more than three months from now, and because the COVID-19 pandemic hasn’t stopped cancer and the work of the American Cancer Society, the event leadership team is planning a virtual event for Friday, May 15.
“Ready, Set, HOPE!” will be a Facebook Live event to jump start fundraising. There will be team challenges, information from the ACS, and more. All are welcome to participate in the event via Facebook.
In the weeks since the COVID-19 mitigation efforts began, more than 700 Relays have been cancelled, seriously impacting ACS finances. “The support and services the American Cancer Society provides are so important we want to make sure they’re able to continue, even with uncertainty in the coming months. That’s why we’re going virtual until we can have our full Relay in August,” Riley explained.
“Watch the Relay for Life of Greene County Facebook page and local media for more information about Ready, Set, HOPE!, and mark August 7 on your calendar. We’re eager to see you at both events,” Riley said.
