Greene County wrestlers traveled to Carroll Dec. 21 for the Tiger-Knight Invitational. The Rams entered nine of 14 weight classes, finishing sixth among 11 teams. Brenner Gallagher (113) and Will Hansen (152) each placed second. Braden Gallagher (120), Brady Stauffer (138), and Nate Black (145) were third, while Chance McCollum (126) was fourth, and Matt Naberhaus (285) was fifth.
Westwood, Sloan won the team title with 171.5 points, followed by Manson-Northwest Webster 166.5, Carroll 162.5, Ames 130.5, Pocahontas Area 123, Greene County 106, Denison-Schleswig 81, Clarinda 69, Kuemper Catholic 58.5, Fort Dodge St. Edmond 46, and Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln 43.
Ram coach Zach Beekman was not happy with his team’s performance at the quad in Jefferson on Thursday, Dec. 19, even though the team defeated all three schools.
He commented: “Last Thursday we competed at home in a quadranglar with CR-B, Nevada and Saydel. Going into the night we knew these were winnable duals just knowing those teams were low on numbers and couldn’t fill weights. I was not impressed with how we wrestled and did not think we showed our home crowd what we are capable of. We walked away with three dual wins on the night, but did not take a step forward as a program.”
The coach was more pleased with the Saturday performances in Carroll.
“Although we lost some hard-fought matches, I felt we wrestled aggressively and learned a lot about where we are and what we need to do to become district and state qualifiers,” stated Beekman.
