The Paton-Churdan boys basketball team started the season with a 63-47 win over the Ar-We-Va at home Dec. 3.
P-C took an early lead when they hosted Ar-We-Va, outscoring the visiting Rockets by 10 points in the first quarter for a 12-2 score at the end of the quarter. Ar-We-Va played even-up the rest of the game but couldn’t overcome the deficit. The score was 25-14 at the intermission and 43-29 after three quarters.Junior Connor Brus played an outstanding game, scoring 21 points with four 3-point baskets and a pair of field goals and five free throws. Brus shot from long range at 75 percent. Seniors Jesse Knowles and Kaleb Fisher scored 12 and 11 points, respectively, with six Fisher’s points from beyond the arc. Sophomore Joe Carey scored nine points, sophomore Bradyn Smith added five, sophomore Cullum Riley and freshman Shaydon Thurman scored two each, and sophomore Justin Stream added a point.
Knowles led in rebounds with 10 defensive rebounds and two offensive rebounds. Smith had nine rebounds.
As a team, the P-C Rockets shot at 46 percent from 2-point range, 41 percent from beyond the arc, and 59 percent from the free throw line.
