Cookout, history program, time capsule ceremony, Trunk-or-Treat slated for Saturday
Grand Junction will wrap up its 2019 Sesquicentennial festivities this weekend with a time capsule ceremony, historical presentation and community cookout on Main Street from 3-5 pm.
Set up for the town’s annual Halloween Trunk or Treat will follow on Main Street at 5 p.m. with “trunk or treating” from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Grand Junction Fire and Rescue will host its popular Halloween Safe House at the fire station during Trunk or Treat.
Well-known auctioneer Dale Higgins of Grand Junction will kick things off at 3 pm in the Community Center with a presentation on Grand Junction history gleaned from his years conducting auctions throughout the area. He will share mementos of town history from his collection housed at his auction barn on Division St.
The GJ 150 Committee will start the time capsule ceremony at 4 pm by showcasing items that community members suggested be placed into a capsule to be buried and reopened in 2069. Items unearthed from a time capsule buried during the 1969 centennial in Grand Junction have been on display in the lobby of the Community Center since the GJ 150 celebration held Aug. 2-4. The items representing 2019 will be placed in the same time capsule and transported to the Grand Junction library. The time capsule will then be re-buried and a formal stone marker donated by Jefferson Monument Works will be placed alongside the 1969 stone marker in front of the Legion Hall monument at the library.
Following the time capsule ceremony, the Grand Junction library and the Grand Junction Lions Club will host a free cookout at the Community Center. Fans returning from the ISU football game in Ames are encouraged to swing by to enjoy the cookout and grab some treats at the Trunk or Treat which will be underway in the early evening.
