Greene County continued their season sweep on the football field with a 28-0 shut out over Class 3A Gilbert. The Rams, ranked fifth in Class 2A, tallied their fourth victory on Linduska Field in Jefferson Sept. 20.
Greene County scored four touchdowns, all in the first half. Ram fans were electrified when senior running back Carter Morton stunned Gilbert on the opening kickoff as he found an opening that led to an 88-yard touchdown.
He brought the crowd to their feet again when quarterback Brent Riley unleased a pass that Morton took 73-yards to the end zone.
Colby Kafer, a workhorse on the team, ground out 100 yards on 21 carries and dashed across the line for a two-yard TD. Nick Breon added to the tally with a 13-yard run for a score. Cael Fisher was successful on all four PATs.
The defense shut out Gilbert’s offense, allowing just 65 yards rushing and 93 passing for a total offense of 158 yards. The Rams had their aerial game in full swing, picking up 243 yards through the air and 108 on the ground for a total offense of 351 yards.
Riley completed 15 of 24 passing attempts for 218 yards and two touchdowns. His top receiver was Morton who pulled down eight passes for 180 yards and a TD.
Will Hansen was the team’s tackle leader with five solo and three assists for a total of 6.5. Breon added two solo and eight assists for a total of six tackles. Cole Betts broke through the Gilbert line for a quarterback sack. Breon and Morton each intercepted a Tiger pass.
Fisher kicked off five times for 272 yards and two touchbacks. Morton had five punts for 145 yards. In addition to the 88-yard kickoff return, Moton added two punt returns for 20 yards.
“We played well on Friday against Gilbert,” noted coach Caden Duncan. “Other than a couple of plays, our defense really shut them down, which was great to see. Our offense showed its explosiveness and big play ability. Our special teams units also showed great effort and did well on the opening kick-off which Carter Morton ran back for a touchdown.
“We are all happy with our performance, but far from satisfied. We look forward to getting better again this week in practice before we go on a long road trip to Shenandoah.”
The Rams travel to 1-3 Shenandoah Friday to open district play. The Mustangs are fresh off a big 52-14 win over Riverside. Kickoff is 7 pm.
