Marianne Carlson of Jefferson added to her collection of State Fair ribbons.
She demonstrated why her homemade cinnamon rolls have earned top dollar in charity auctions around the county, winning reserve sweepstakes honors in the King Arthur flour yeast rolls competition judged Aug. 11. She placed first in the cinnamon rolls (frosted or glazed) category, second in the cinnamon rolls (with nuts) category, first in the whole wheat pan rolls (1/2 whole wheat) category, and second in the sweet rolls other than named category.
Entries were judged on flavor, appearance and texture.
She claimed second place and $50 in cash and gift cards in the Iowa’s Best Fudge contest judged Aug. 13. Entries were judged on flavor, appearance and texture.
She also placed second in the Peach Blend two crust pie competition the same day. She received a $25 cash prize.
Contestants were judged on crust quality, filling flavor and appearance.
Carlson placed third overall in the cream pie division and third overall in the fruit pie division in the Machine Shed pies competition judged Aug. 12. It was her chocolate cream pie that and her rhubarb-strawberry pie that claimed the honors. Her blueberry pie placed third in that category
Entries were judged on quality of the crust, filling, appearance and originality.
She placed third overall and received $125 in cash and gift cards in the Nostalgic Comfort Foods competition judged Aug. 13. Her main dish entry was first place in that category.
Contestants were challenged to create an antique, retro or nostalgic dish that reminded judges of the years of old. Entries were judged on taste, originality and appearance.
In judging Aug. 15, Carlson won first place and a $100 cash award in the Best Mardi Gras King Cake competition. Entries were judged and taste and design.
