In Greene County district court Heidi Marie Chapman, 30, of Perry was sentenced May 24 to two years in prison after she changed her plea to guilty to a charge of operating vehicle without owner’s consent. The prison term was suspended and she was placed on probation for two years. Chapman was fined $625 with a $218.75 surcharge and a $125 Law Enforcement Initiative surcharge. She must also pay $466.36 restitution for her court appointed attorney’s fees and $777.94 court costs. (Sentencing: Honorable Joseph B. McCarville)
Michael Allen Olson, 57, of Jefferson received identical sentences on two separate charges of operating while intoxicated- first offense. The first was initiated Jan. 3 and the second was initiated March 4. He was sentenced to two days in jail in each case, with the terms consecutive. He must pay sheriff’s room and board fees for the time he serves. He must also complete a community college drinking drivers school. He may complete the Des Moines Area Community College 48-hour alcohol education program in lieu of the jail time. he must undergo a substance abuse evaluation and complete any recommended treatment at his own expense.
Olson was fined $1,250 with a $437.50 surcharge and a $10 surcharge for drug abuse resistance education (DARE) in each case. Court costs were $100 in each case.
Olson was also charged with driving while license revoked in the March case. That charge was dismissed. (Sentencing: McCarville)
Robert Richard Kovar, 34, of Jefferson was sentenced to two years in prison after he changed his plea to guilty to a charge of possession of methamphetamine- second offense. The prison term was suspended and he was placed on probation for two years. He must undergo a substance evaluation and complete any recommended treatment at his own expense. Douglas Duane Owen, 37, of Churdan was sentenced to 14 days in jail after he changed his plea to guilty to a charge of driving while license barred. Mikael Goran Winblad, 38, of Scranton was sentenced to two years in prison after he changed his plea to guilty to a charge of child endangerment. The prison term was suspended and he was placed on probation for two years. Winblad was fined $625 with a $218.75 surcharge. Court costs were $147.10. (Sentencing: McCarville)
Branden Gerrick Smith, 42, of Jefferson was sentenced to two years in prison after he pleaded guilty to a charge of domestic abuse assault- second offense, amended from domestic abuse assault- third or subsequent offense. Smith was fined $625 with a $218.75 surcharge; both were suspended. He must pay as $100 domestic abuse surcharge and $277.50 court costs. Charges of eluding and possession of a firearm as a felon were dismissed.
In a separate case against Smith, he was sentenced to two years in prison after he pleaded guilty to a charge of domestic abuse assault- second offense, also amended from domestic abuse assault- third or subsequent offense. The prison terms are concurrent. Smith was fined $625 with a $218.75 surcharge; both were suspended. He must pay as $100 domestic abuse surcharge. In that case he was also charged with criminal mischief- third degree. He was fined $625 with a $218.75 surcharge; both were suspended. He must pay $3,500 restitution for his court appointed attorney’s fees and $83.99 court costs.
A magistrate charge of violation of a protective order against Smith was dismissed. No court costs were assessed against him. (Sentencing: McCarville)
Kandice Maree Agar, 34, of Jefferson was sentenced to two days in jail after she changed her plea to guilty to a charge of operating while intoxicated- first offense. She must complete the recommendations of a substance abuse evaluation she has already undergone. She must complete a community college drinking drivers school. She may complete the Des Moines Area Community College 48-hour alcohol education program in lieu of the jail time. Agar was fined $1,250 with a $437.50 surcharge; one-half will be suspended if she obtains a temporary restricted driver’s license. She must pay a $10 DARE surcharge. Shawn Robert Clark, 43, of Stuart was sentenced to five years in prison after he changed his plea to guilty to a charge of theft- second degree. The prison term was suspended and he was placed on probation for two years. Clark was fined $750 with a $262.50 surcharge; both were suspended. He must pay a $125 LEI surcharge and $1,056.08 victim restitution. The judge ruled Clark is unable to pay restitution for his court appointed attorney’s fees. In a case initiated in April, Lauren Marie Verle Schulte, 24,of Jefferson was sentenced to 60 days in jail after she pleaded guilty to a charge of assault on persons in certain occupations. All but 10 days of the jail time was suspended and she was placed on informal probation for one year. She must pay sheriff’s room and board fees for the time she serves. She must undergo a substance abuse evaluation and complete any recommended treatment at her own expense. She must also write letters of apology to the two Jefferson police officers she assaulted. Schulte was fined $315 with a $110.25 surcharge. Court costs were $100.
Schulte was charged with the same offense in a prior case initiated in February. That charge was dismissed as part of a plea agreement. Court costs were $100.
A judgment was also entered in a magistrate court case in which Schulte was charged with disorderly conduct. She was fined $65 with a $22.75 surcharge. Court costs were $60. (Sentencing: McCarville)
Persons pleaded not guilty during the week ending May 30 as follows: Douglas Joseph Strang, 62, of West Des Moines, OWI- second offense; and Merle Crit Holland, 57, of Des Moines, OWI- first offense. Trial dates were set for July 23 in both cases.
