The stipends paid to Jefferson city council members and the mayor will double effective Jan. 1, 2020.
With virtually no discussion the council approved the first reading of an ordinance increasing the compensation of council members from $30 per meeting, not to exceed $1,000 per year, to $60 per meeting, not to exceed $2,000.
The council also approved the first reading of an ordinance increasing the mayor’s compensation from $200 per month to $400 per month.
Mayor Craig Berry reminded council members they could waive the second and third readings; by consensus, they agreed not to do so.
Council members and the mayor have not seen an increase in compensation since 2002.
Consideration of the city administrator’s contract was also on the agenda; the council moved that item to the June 11 meeting.
