The Scranton Alumni Association and Scranton Betterment Committee hosted their annual Six-on-Six Girls Basketball Classic Saturday evening in the Scranton Community Center. A good -sized crowd enjoyed the food and fun as the glory days of girls basketball were recalled.
The experienced players (Iowa Hot Shots) squared off against the Greene County All-Stars, high school players from Greene County and Paton-Churdan.
The Hot Shots had practiced with the All-Stars, sharing their knowledge, but the younger generation struggled to be limited by two dribbles. However, they improved steadily throughout the game. The Hot Shots won the contest 71-50.
Prior to the start of the game, former six-on-six coaches were recognized. Sharing some of their experiences with moderator Chuck Offenburger were Ed Rezabek of Glidden-Ralston, Steve Smith of Guthrie Center, and Delayne Hopkins, former Scranton coach.
Scranton even had a cheerleader suit up for the evening. Lorrie Buswell Zellweger (Class of 1970) got the crowd on their feet cheering as the Trojan fight song was performed by the Churdan Town and Country Band Saturday evening.
The driving force behind the six-on-six classic is Dawn Rudolph. She volunteers hundreds of hours at the Scranton Community Center. During the winter months, the Iowa Hot Shots scrimmage on Sunday evenings to maintain their prowess.
