High school juniors interested in citizenship and democracy are invited to apply to attend the American Legion Boys State or Girls State program.
The program offers a week-long, hands-on experience in the operation of the democratic form of government, the organization of political parties, and the relationship of one to the other in shaping Iowa government.
This non-partisan educational program is designed to mirror the structure and operation of state government while providing training in practical citizenship, leadership and character. “This is an incredible academic experience and resume builder,” said Barb Labate, a Navy veteran and member of American Legion Post 11 in Jefferson.
The Boys State and Girls State registration fees will be paid by Post 11. Boys State will be held June 9-14 at Camp Dodge in Johnston. Girls State will be held June 16-21 on the Drake University campus in Des Moines.
Students who want more information about how to apply can call Labate at 515-386-5547. Registration closes March 30.
