The numbers are impressive. Thanks to the faithful volunteers and an increased awareness of the organized activities, the Scranton Community Center saw a large increase in utilization in 2018.
Dawn Rudolph who heads up the volunteers and donated 567 hours of the total 950 hours last year, compiled an interesting report of the building usage.
Scranton Park and Rec used the facility 83 days for walking, twice for six-on-six basketball, six line dancing classes and a self-defense class. That usage showed the largest increase over the previous year.
Private and business rentals also increased. The facility was used for family gatherings, graduations, funerals, baby and bridal showers and birthday parties. The community room was rented 26 times while the community room and gym was rented six times. There were seven other rentals utilizing a combination of gym, community room and game room.
Other rentals included: about 180 times as the school bus stop, 160 events by Play4Him basketball, 42 times by Play4Him volleyball, seven Play4Him pitching clinics and the Greene County 4-H basketball tournament. Scranton Manufacturing / New Way also utilized the facility 20 times.
The building was used with no charge for these events: Cocoa with the Clauses, Scranton Betterment pancake and soup suppers, four elections, 11 Community Center board meetings, two 4-H meetings, sesquicentennial fundraisers, Greene County public health flu shot clinic, LifeServe blood drive, Break the Cycle- Bike ride break, Greene County School career academy presentations, animal shelter presentations, Community Center garage/vendor sale fundraiser and alumni meeting.
Rudolph’s statistics show in 2018, the building use numbered 568 (or 305 without the bus stop / walking figures.) The previous years did not include the bus stop or walking but prove a steady influx of usage, including 274 in 2017; 109 in 2016; 97 in 2015 and 82 in 2014.
All totaled, the Scranton Community Center had visitors taking advantage of the facility on 306 days out of 365 day year.
The Community Center advisory board includes Rudolph, Amy Christian, Carol Eason, Doug Hawn and Cole Gustoff. They completed goals and projects for 2018 including:
• Establish flat rate agreements for Play4Him and Scranton Manufacturing / New Way
• New entrance doors to the gym
• Completion of the Memory Room project with the addition of another display case to the room
• Keyless entry
• New water cooler
• Install fence between City Hall and Community Center
The board’s goal for 2019 is to Increase more yearly sponsors with advertising banners. Anyone interested in joining the sponsors should contact Hawn or Rudolph.
Additional volunteers assisting with the operation of the Community Center in 2018 were Delores Gibson, Hawn, Ellie Umbaugh, Jerry Boyd, Jeff Rudolph, Eason, Christian, Lorrie Zellweger, David and Cheryl Diderickson, Teresa Mobley, Troy Gibson, Peggy Hoyt, Chantel Kirk, Elise Jablonski, Kim Burley, Ian Sumner and Karen Teruya.

Weekly activities – The Scranton Community Center has options to keep the winter blahs away. The gym is currently open from 1 – 2 pm weekdays. Other times available upon request.
The Community Center also offers six-on-six basketball every Sunday evening at 6:30 pm and line dancing on Fridays at 6:30 pm.
Get your dancing shoes on for Line Dancing with instructor Petra is held Fridays at 6:30 – 8 p.m. $5 per person per night: January 18 and 25, February 1 and 8, March 1, 8, 15 and 22, April 12, 19 and 26, and May 3.
