Police are looking for Rodney Dean Halterman, 18, recently of Jefferson and Grand Junction, as the alleged shooter of a woman in Ames Saturday afternoon. As of Monday afternoon, he has not been apprehended.
According to the victim and a witness, Halterman shot the woman in the chest at a residence in the neighborhood west of the Iowa Department of Transportation complex. She was taken to Mary Greeley Medical Center by private vehicle and ER staff notified the police. The victim was released from the hospital Sunday.
Halterman is charged with attempted murder, a Class B felony.
He is scheduled to go to trial in Greene County Jan. 29 in a case initiated in October in which he was charged with possession of marijuana with intent to deliver within 1,000 feet of a city-owned public park, failure to affix tax stamp, and theft- fourth degree; and in a case initiated in November in which he was charged with drug distribution violation to person younger than 18.
Greene County attorney Thomas Laehn said it’s uncertain that Halterman’s trial will proceed in Greene County as scheduled, as the Story County charge is more serious.
