Greene County sheriff’s deputy Kirk Hammer has resigned from the sheriff’s office after he was cited for unlawful possession of whitetail deer antlers.
According to a press release from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, Hammer responded to a car-deer accident Nov. 3 on Highway 4 north of Jefferson. Someone at the scene asked for a salvage tag but Hammer denied his request. The same person drove past the scene later in the day and witnessed Hammer cutting the antlers from the deer.
Hammer paid the $195 fine. He resigned Nov. 20 in lieu of termination. Although personnel matters are not generally released to the public, Greene County sheriff Jack Williams named to another local media several sheriff’s office policies Hammer allegedly failed to follow.
Hammer ran against Williams for the sheriff’s office in 2016.
