Public welcome; RSVP by Friday
Iowa Hawkeye great Chuck Long will hare stories of his football life and career and sign copies of his just-released biography Destined for Greatness during a special noon meeting of the Jefferson Rotary Club.
Guests are encouraged to join Jefferson Rotarians Monday, Oct. 29, from noon to 1 pm at the Rotary Room in the clubhouse at the Jefferson Municipal Course.
A buffet lunch will be available at noon, with Long’s presentation at 12:30. He’ll autograph books and be available for photos following the presentation. Copies of Destined for Greatness will be available for purchase.
Persons planning to attend are asked to RSVP by this Friday at 2 pm to Rotary president Carol Durbin at 515-341-0296. There is a charge for the meal; it can be paid at the door.
Destined for Greatness, authored by Waukee Rotarian Aaron Putze, tells the story of Longs remarkable career and the 1980s resurgence of the University of Iowa football program. The journey is an inspiring one, from starring on the neighborhood playground as a boy growing up in Wheaton, IL, to his current role as CEO and executive director of the Iowa Sports Foundation.
The narrative recounts the highs and lows of the Iowa football program’s struggle to reclaim national relevance while Iowans endured the 1980s farm crisis. It also retraces Long’s path from starring in Kinnick Stadium to the challenges he faced in competing in the NFL including his first start under the lights in a Monday night contest against the defending Super Bowl champion Chicago Bears.
