Memorial Day will be observed Monday, May 28, around the county as follows:
St Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Jefferson – Blessing of graves, a VFW/American Legion firing squad and Taps by John Mobley IV at 9:30 am, after 8 am mass at St Brigid Catholic Church in Grand Junction.
Jefferson Municipal Cemetery – 10:45 am, with Pastor Dennis Martens of Trinity Lutheran Church giving the invocation, the Memorial Day address by Amelia Carman, music by the Greene County High School band, and military honors by a VFW/American Legion firing squad.
Scranton Township Cemetery – 9:45 am, with opening prayer by Randy Hoyt, flag ceremony by Jefferson Boy Scout Troop 534, music by the Greene County High School Band and Arthur and Avery Bardole, and speaker Jordan Davis. Names of all who have died and been buried in the Scranton Cemetery since Memorial Day 2017 will be read. (In case of inclement weather this event will take place in the gymnasium in Scranton.)
Rippey community – Kinkead-Martin American Legion Post #583 will conduct its ceremony at the conclusion of the services at the Pleasant Hill Memorial Sunday, May 27, at 11:30 am.
On Memorial Day (Monday), the Legionnaires will be at Fairview United Methodist Church at 9 am for the services and perform their ceremony at the cemetery afterwards.
They will be at the Angus Cemetery at 10 am, Old Rippey Cemetery at 10:30 am, and conclude the morning at the Rippey Cemetery at 11 am.
There will be a meal following the Memorial Day services at the Rippey United Methodist Church.
St Patrick Church, Cedar Township – 8 am, ecumenical Memorial Day prayer service in the church, followed by a military ceremony in the St Patrick Cemetery, with military honors by the Churdan American Legion.
Highland Township Cemetery, Churdan – 10 am, with music by the Town & Country Band and military honors by the Churdan American Legion. Note change in time.
The Churdan American Legion auxiliary will serve coffee and treats at the American Legion hall from 8 am to noon. St Patrick Church will remain open until 5 pm.
Franklin Township – 11 am at the cemetery in Cooper. Pastor Larry Monthei will provide a benediction and Paul Johnson American Legion Post 687 will provide military honors
Dillavou Cemetery north of Ralston – 2 pm with guest speaker Ralph McClurg, a missionary and Vietnam veteran. Bring lawn chairs. In case of rain or high winds the service will be held at the Ralston Community Church. ~The Scranton Journal contributed to this post.
