The 2018 Relay for Life of Greene County, with a super hero theme and “Who’s Your Hero?!” as a tagline, will be held this Saturday, April 21, at the Greene County Community Center in Jefferson.
There are all sort of heroes in the fight against cancer: survivors, caregivers, those who have died of cancer, service providers, advocates, research scientists and more. There is also an important group of behind-the-scenes heroes for the Relay for Life – sponsors.
Area businesses and organizations have provided generous cash and in-kind sponsorships, as well as items for the silent auction.
“These sponsors are part of the ‘Pow! Zap! Bam!’ we hope to give cancer,” said Tori Riley, Relay event leadership team chair. “Their donations go into the fundraising total and allow all the money raised at the Relay to go to the American Cancer Society to assist in ridding the world of the devastating impact of cancer.”
Sponsors of the 2018 Relay for Life at the platinum level with cash or in-kind donations of $1,250 are American Athletic Inc/Spalding and the Kiwanis Club of Jefferson.
Gold level sponsors with donations of $1,000 are Jefferson Telecom and Raccoon Valley Radio.
Silver sponsors with $500 in cash or in-kind donations include A & W Family Restaurant, Farmers Mutual Insurance Association, Home State Bank, Genesis Development, HyVee, Wells Fargo Bank, Community State Bank (Paton), Landus Cooperative (Jefferson, Scranton, Bayard and Yale), Peoples Trust & Savings Bank, Fareway Inc, Jefferson Bee & Herald, Greene County Medical Center, GreeneCountyNewsOnline, Greene County Community Center, ShineOn Designs, Greene County Pork Producers, and Greene County Cattlemen.
Businesses that gave $250 and are bronze sponsors include Neese Inc, Christensen Ag Services Inc, Hoyt and Morain Law Firm PC, McFarland Clinic, Medicap Pharmacy, Hastings Funeral Home, UnityPoint, and New Way.
Some sponsors have requested to remain anonymous to the public.

“The Relay for Life is one of those great events that draws people from all over the county, and we’re always happy to see people come from miles away to support their loved ones who are survivors,” said chair Riley. “The event leadership team is eager to see a big, generous crowd on Saturday.”
The Heroes-in-Training and 5K runs are the only portions of the Relay that may be affected by weather. All other Relay events will be held as planned, regardless of weather.
