Additional volunteers are needed for the Scranton sesquicentennial committee to assure a successful event on Saturday, June 29, 2019. Organizational meetings have been held with several people joining the group but more help is needed.
Base committee members are Cheryl Dideriksen, Carol Eason, Julie McAleer, Carolyn Reinke, Becky Rumley and Kim Winkelman.
An informational meeting was held Jan. 29 with more than 30 people in attendance. The primary goal was to hear ideas, generate discussion and obtain volunteers. Several people stepped forward that night and others joined the group later.
A follow up meeting was held Feb. 5. Eason was scheduled to present a report to the Scranton city council on Feb. 13.
The next steps are to secure and review funding from businesses; as funding is obtained, begin ordering memorabilia; secure event leads; obtain photos to be reproduced on products including calendar, note cards, etc.
Fundraising ideas were considered. In addition to securing donations from businesses, the group is considering fish fry meals and partnering with Scranton Betterment for BINGO.
Tentative plans for the sesquicentennial event include: parade; auto and tractor shows; beard contest; DJ and karaoke with beer garden; children’s activities and games; adult competitions including tug of war, horse shoes, etc; alumni choir; vendor fair; quilting demonstration and more.
