VFW asks city to help with sewer repair

VFW Post 9599 may close its building on the east side of the courthouse square in Jefferson if an affordable fix for a plumbing problem isn’t found.

Post commander Don Ihnken told the Jefferson city council during the open forum of the council meeting Tuesday that the sewer line from the building is backing up, for the second time in a year. Ihnken claims problems began with the floor drains at the building after the city’s streetscape project four years ago. He learned Monday that the sewer line has deteriorated.

He said the building can’t be used for public functions until the kitchen and restrooms can be used.

“We’re asking for the city to help put a new sewer system in, out of the building into the alley,” Ihnken said. “We don’t have the funds. Down the road if we can’t do functions and generate some income, we’re going to have to walk away from the building.”

He said he doesn’t have a repair estimate.

City public works superintendent Dave Morlan said he didn’t know of the problem and that he would have a city crew there Wednesday morning.
