~by Chuck Offenburger for the Courthouse 100 committee The “Courthouse 100” committee, which for nearly two years has been planning events celebrating the centennial of the Greene County Ccourthouse, has had some fun surprises while sifting through the history of the inspiring building in Jefferson.

Good news on enrollment, too Paton-Churdan principal Annie Smith reports that P-C was the highest achieving school in both math and science out of all 40 schools in the Prairie Lakes AEA for the 2016-17 school year, according to a report prepared by the Iowa Department of Education’s Edlnsight reporting system*.

Area residents are invited to bring blankets and lawn chairs and enjoy free Charlie Brown movies and free popcorn on the Bell Tower plaza Tuesday, Sept. 26, at 7 pm. Members of Christ Lutheran Church will serve their annual homecoming tailgate barbecue Friday, Sept. 29, at the church on S. Elm St in Jefferson, north of the high school. Bratwurst and hotdogs will be on the grill. Inside seating and carryouts will be available.

The original poetry of five Greene County poets has been selected for the 2017 edition of Lyrical Iowa, the annual anthology published by the Iowa Poetry Association. The anthology includes poems by Iowa writers of all ages. Lyrical Iowa will include poems by Lorene Conner, Victoria Riley, Hollie Roberts and Jerry Roberts, all of Jefferson, and Nancy Hanaman of Rippey.

Multi-instrumentalist Todd Green will perform on instruments from around the world Saturday, Sept. 30, at 7 pm at the Adair-Casey/Guthrie Center high school auditorium in Guthrie Center. He is hosted by the Guthrie County Arts Council.
