The Greene County varsity volleyball team won three of six matches in its first competition of the season, the South Central Calhoun tournament held Saturday.
“As an inexperienced team we did fairly well,” coach Donna Carhill said. “I saw several players really start to develop at the varsity level. We ran a quicker offense than we have in the past and served more aggressively.”
Scores were SCC 17-21, 9-21; South Hamilton 12-21, 20-22; West Central Valley 21-19, 21-13; IKM-Manning 11-21, 21-19, 10-15; Audubon 21-10, 21-15; and Belmond-Klemme 21-11, 21-10.
At the service line Samantha Hardaway was 67 of 76 with 12 aces, Aubrey Heupel was 40 of 50 with 12 aces, and Kaitlyn McColley was 20 of 23 with eight aces.
Megan Durbin led in kills with 49 and in digs with 38. Heupel led in assists with 75. Hardaway had 16 kills and Chantel Flack had 29 digs.
“There is no question we will continue to develop and improve as the season progresses and it’s exciting to think where this team will be by mid-season,” Carhill said.
