Gwen Black was crowned Greene County Fair queen Friday evening. She will represent the county in the Iowa State Fair queen pageant as well as present trophies and ribbons at county fair events.
She was selected by a panel of judges from Beta Tau Delta sorority. The selection was made based on prior interviews with the judges and answers to questions drawn randomly during the contest.
Along with the chance to compete for college scholarships at the State Fair, Black received a $500 scholarship from Humboldt Mutual Insurance. Humboldt Mutual is awarding similar scholarships at seven county fairs this summer. Carol Durbin of Kingsgate Insurance in Jefferson made the presentation.
Black will be a senior at Greene County High School. She is a district officer in the FFA and is active in 4-H, National Honor Society, student council Interact and cheerleading. She is the daughter of Chad and Shannon Black of rural Jefferson.
She was crowned by 2016 Greene County Fair queen Kara Betts.
