After a summer without a pool, residents in Grand Junction are happy to have their municipal swimming pool open again.
According to city clerk Katherine Thomas, “the pool looks fresh and new.” A fundraising effort netted $80,218.50 for repair and renovations to the pool, which was closed last summer due to needed repairs.
The city obtained a $22,000 grant from the Greene County Community Foundation; a $10,000 grant from Wellmark; and a $10,000 gift from Cecil Reuter. The remaining money came from an array of fundraisers held over the past year.
The pool has all new fixtures and has been freshly painted. A heater was added to allow for a longer swimming season. “We are essentially finished, but will continue to make improvements along with routine maintenance each year,” Thomas said.
Thomas thanked all the individuals who donated to the project. “It could not have happened if they had not pulled together and supported the fundraisers,” she said. She also thanked the park board volunteers who spent hours working at the pool to save money on the renovations.
“Our pool is a tremendous amenity for our citizens, as well as those of the towns surrounding us, and we want to keep it available for years to come,” Thomas said.
