The Highway 4 overpass in Jefferson will be named and dedicated as the Greene County Veterans and First Responders Memorial Bridge. County engineer Wade Weiss reported Monday that the Iowa Department of Transportation has approved that designation.
The DOT will make and install the signage at a total cost of $420. The source of the funding is unknown at this time. American Legion post commander Jim Andrew approached the county supervisors and Jefferson city council in May for a letter of support for the designation, but neither elected group committed funds.
In other DOT news, the city of Jefferson has received word the DOT plans to resurface Elm St (Highway 4) from Lincoln Way to Highway 30 next summer. The project will include new curbs and handicap ramps.
Total cost of the project is estimated at $700,000, with the city paying about 10 percent.
No work will be done on the overpass, as that pavement will be only 5 years old next summer.
