The larger of the bells for the Mahanay Memorial Carillon Tower arrived from Verdin Company in Cincinnati Thursday morning.
While painters finished their work at the top, the Verdin crew organized and labeled the bells. Don Van Gilder took photographs of every bell.
Greene County engineer Wade Weiss took three bells for show-and-tell at the long term care unit at Greene County Medical Center. The bells were donated by LTC resident Velma Radebaugh and her sister and nephew, Vivian and Rory Autenreith. Two of the bells Weiss took weighed close to 100 pounds each, and the smallest bell weighed 30 pounds.
By the end of the work day, 24 small, new bells were hung, making a total of 29 bells hanging at the top of the tower.
Hanging the bells is only part of the job. Wiring them into the system is another matter. The crew doesn’t expect to be finished until next Tuesday or Wednesday.
