“Wellness Palooza” will come to Greene County on Feb 20 at the Greene County Community Center.
Wellness Palooza is a grant-funded initiative to provide information and wellness resources to the residents of Greene County. Events will run from 7 to 8 pm, with fun activities for kids ages 5-12 led by Sean Ostendorf. Teens can stop in and complete a fitness challenge for the chance to win numerous prizes. Refreshments will be provided during the gathering, and there will be drawings for door prizes.
Participants can choose from several 25-minute presentations. Jocelyn Evans, Hy-Vee dietitian, will host two sessions called “Eating Better, Paying Less.” According to Evans, participants will learn how to eat healthy foods without stretching their pocket books. There will also be samples and coupons given to each participant.
Angie Baack, prevention consultant for New Opportunities, will present an informational session regarding tobacco use, e-Cigarettes, and safe prescription drug use. The presentation is intended for all audiences and will cover the negative effects of using tobacco products through the use of realistic visual aids. Resources for quitting will also be available. The session will also cover the safe use and disposal of prescription medication.
Ann Hicks, school nurse for Greene County Community Schools, will provide information about the free health resources that are available for school-age children and their families. She can also answer questions about health services, screenings, and who to contact for more information. With the recent attention given to the Affordable Care Act, this session can help prepare families for future health service needs.
This community gathering is part of the Get Connected! Grant awarded to Greene County Community School District.
