Ram girls snap losing streak with win over Eagles

The Greene County girls ended an 11-game losing streak with a win over the Saydel Eagles in Saydel Monday. The Mega Night was rescheduled from Jan. 24.

The girls topped the Eagles 44-34 even without lead scorer Kenna Marquardt. Marquardt will be out for the rest of the season due to a knee injury. Junior Samantha Hardaway stepped up and scored 16 points, well ahead of her average of 3.5 points per game. Junior Laurin Lyons scored 13 points, also ahead of her average of 8.4 points.

Seniors Hannah Promes and Taylor Wessling, and junior Onica Delp scored four points each. Juniors Ashley Millard and Regan Lamoureux added two points and one point respectively.

The teams traded the lead during the first quarter. When the buzzer sounded, the Eagles were ahead 13-10. The Rams were up 16-15 with four minutes to play in the second quarter and held an 18-17 lead at halftime.

The Eagles were ahead 21-20 two minutes into the third quarter, but the Rams claimed a 23-21 lead with five minutes to play and held the lead the rest of the game. The score was 33-26 after three quarters.

Free throws made the difference in the game. The Eagles made a respectable 80 percent of their free throws, but they made it to the line just 10 times compared to the Rams’ 24 times. The Rams made nine of 12 free throws in the fourth quarter and 15 of 24 for the game for 62.5 percent. Hardaway was four for four at the line and Lyons was seven for nine.

The Rams shot at 34 percent from the floor while the Eagles made 26 percent of their shots.

The win snapped an 11 game losing streak for the Rams. They’re now 3-12 in the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference and 4-16 overall. The Rams finish the regular season Tuesday in Gilbert and then begin post season play Saturday in a Class 3A Region 3 game in Carroll against the 12-7 Kuemper Catholic Knights. Game time is 7 pm.
